Half Moon Bay, CA – The City of Half Moon Bay has scheduled a special One-Year Remembrance Ceremony in honor of the victims and survivors of the tragic shooting of January 23, 2023, which took the lives of seven local farmworkers.

This Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 4 pm – 6 pm at the Boys & Girls Club Event Center, 530 Kelly Avenue, in Half Moon Bay. All are invited to share this solemn occasion with friends, family, and other community members.

This One-Year Remembrance Ceremony will commemorate the lives lost and those who suffered injuries, as well as those who witnessed or were displaced by the shootings. Local faith leaders will speak, and a special “sound healing” activity will take place, which uses various instruments to create a beautiful, comforting sound experience offering a kind of therapy intended to improve one’s well-being and state of mind.

As part of the remembrance, a candlelit procession will take place starting at the Boys & Girls Club Event Center and ending at Mac Dutra Plaza, where all are invited to participate in a moment of silence for the victims.

Confirmed speakers include members of the Half Moon Bay City Council, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, Senator Josh Becker, Assemblymember Marc Berman, San Mateo County District 3 Supervisor Ray Mueller, and former United States Representative Jackie Speier.

The City of Half Moon Bay shares in the complex mix of emotions that this appalling and shocking incident brought to the Coastside community. As one way of moving forward, the City fostered the creation of a local committee of community members – the Farmworker Memorial and Remembrance Advisory Committee – with the charge of working together toward a suitable memorial to those lost, and a Remembrance Ceremony. The committee includes relatives of victims, representatives of the farmworker community, nonprofit organizations, and at-large community members from both the Asian Pacific Islander and Latino communities.

City staff has been facilitating the committee’s monthly meetings and is continuing to work to implement this One-Year Remembrance Ceremony as well as a memorial fixture.

The community is invited to join in the One-Year Remembrance Ceremony as a way of continuing the healing process, bringing people together around this tragedy, and helping to build bridges to a better future for the survivors and others who were affected.

La ciudad de Half Moon Bay ha programado una ceremonia especial de conmemoración de un año en honor a las víctimas y sobrevivientes del trágico tiroteo del 23 de enero de 2023, que cobró la vida de siete trabajadores agrícolas locales.

Esta ceremonia está programada para el domingo 21 de enero de 2024, de 4 p.m. a 6 p.m. en el Centro de Eventos Boys & Girls Club, 530 Kelly Ave, en Half Moon Bay. Todos están invitados a compartir esta solemne ocasión con amigos, familiares y otros miembros de la comunidad.
