This weekend, residents have the unique opportunity to drop off large unwanted household items while also learning about City of Edmonton services and equipment.
On August 20 and 21, the City hosts a special edition of its well-known Big Bin events—a Big Bin “Plus” event—outside Northlands Coliseum. In addition to disposing of items that are too large for regular waste collection, residents can enjoy activities and demonstrations that are fun and informative for the family.
The Big Bin “Plus” event includes:
- A demonstration of how the City’s garbage trucks pick up garbage and food scraps carts.
- An electric bus for residents to explore.
- A look at new City tools including an infrared asphalt repair unit being used by the City to fill potholes, a spray patcher also used to fill potholes, as well as bridge inspection equipment.
Residents can also bring their own buckets or pails and shovels, and take home free City compost, which is made from food scraps and yard waste collected at the curb. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days and parking is available on site.
“Our Big Bin events are a convenient way for residents to dispose of large or bulky items, like appliances and old furniture. They always capture the interest of Edmontonians, and they present a great opportunity to help Edmontonians get more acquainted with some of the other services the City provides,” said Chris Fowler, Director of Collection Services. “There’s going to be something there for everyone, and we hope that residents will bring their whole family, whether or not they have anything to drop in the Big Bins.”
In addition to the event at the Coliseum, the City will host two more standard Big Bin events this year: September 10 and 11 in Castle Downs (11520-153 Ave) and September 17-18 in Ellerslie (2415-101 Street SW). The City’s four Eco Stations will also hold two more free weekends, on August 27-28 and October 1-2.
“We’re pleased to be able to continue to make Free Eco Station weekends an option for residents,” said Doug Sheremeta, Eco Station program supervisor. “These events provide residents with the ability to dispose not only of bulky items, like the Big Bin events, but other waste, including household hazardous waste and batteries. Together, in addition with regular collection, these events help ensure residents have plenty of options to conveniently dispose of all their waste ”
Residents should be aware that they are required to unload their own vehicles at both Big Bin events and during free Eco Station weekends, and there may be line-ups due to event popularity.
