June 6, 2019

Soccer Week in Edmonton will be highlighted by a friendly international match between Cardiff City Football Club and Real Valladolid at Commonwealth Stadium on July 20 at 7 p.m.

The City of Edmonton in partnership with On Ice Entertainment Ltd. will host the match and other activities to celebrate soccer in the city from July 17 to 21, 2019.

"Edmontonians love the beautiful game and we're proud to host these premier players at Commonwealth Stadium," said Mayor Don Iveson. "There's big support for soccer in Edmonton and hosting this event shows we are in the right position to host FIFA 2026."

Other activities during the week include FC Edmonton vs. Valour FC at Clarke Stadium on July 17, minor soccer community events, coaches clinics, open practice experience, family fun zones, a women’s club soccer showcase game Green and Gold vs. Northwest United on July 20, and the Soccer Night of Stars Gala on July 19.

“FC Edmonton believes in allowing the best possible soccer experience for all Edmontonians, especially youth in Edmonton,” said Tom Fath, co-owner of FC Edmonton. “Hosting this international friendly helps youth see the path from their soccer club teams and soccer academies to professional soccer nationally and internationally. It helps give them the dream to keep them in soccer long term.”

Alberta Soccer was also at the event at Commonwealth Stadium announcing the international friendly match.

“It is fantastic that two teams who have played in the top two leagues in the world are coming to Edmonton to compete at the highest level,” said Shaun Lowther, Executive Director of Alberta Soccer. “The opposing styles of each team will showcase the way the sport is played in different countries, and it will be a treat to see our very own Canadian National Team player Junior Hoilett suit up for Cardiff, inspiring our youngsters to dream big.”

Tickets for the international friendly soccer match at Commonwealth Stadium go on sale to the public Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca .
