Celebrating local Olympic and Paralympic Athletes

September 20, 2024

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi proclaimed yesterday “Day of Athletic Excellence” as the City of Edmonton and Sport Edmonton celebrated the outstanding achievements of local athletes who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games. These incredible athletes not only brought home personal victories, but inspired our community with their perseverance, dedication and sportsmanship.

Among the celebrated athletes are Marco Arop, who participated in Athletics and won silver in the 800m men’s race at the Olympic Games, and Reid Maxwell who participated in Para Swimming and won silver in the men’s S8 400m Freestyle at the Paralympic Games.

“The City recognizes the hard work and commitment required to compete at the highest level of sport,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. “We are incredibly proud of these athletes, both for their exceptional performances and also for serving as role models and ambassadors within our community.”

"We gathered to honour those who embody the spirit of excellence and perseverance. Our Olympic and Paralympic athletes remind us that dreams are achieved not just through talent, but through unwavering dedication and resilience,” said Reed Clarke, CEO of Sport Edmonton. “Let us celebrate their journeys, their triumphs, and the inspiration they bring to us all."

“It’s wonderful to be home and share this summer’s Olympic and Diamond League success with my family, friends, and community,” said Marco Arop, Team Canada’s Paris 2024 men's 800m silver medallist. “The support from everyone in Edmonton has been tremendous and I am very grateful,”

The City of Edmonton through its Live Active Strategy supports excellence by providing sport and recreation infrastructure and programming that provide opportunities and promotes active lifestyles for all residents, and fosters communities where athletes can achieve their full potential.
