Citation & Performance Awards honour distinguished Edmontonians

Edmontonians who have enhanced arts and culture, community service and sports in the city were honoured at the 2018 Salute to Excellence Citation & Performance Awards.

“Edmontonians have a great reputation for being leaders and building community life,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “Tonight, we’re recognizing outstanding individuals who have gone above and beyond, accomplishing great feats to selflessly help others and inspire a new generation of change-makers.”

Citation Awards honour individuals or groups who have given more than five years of service as artists, volunteers or inspirational leaders in arts and culture, community service or sports. This year, 11 individuals were awarded citation awards.

Arts and Culture
  • April Dean: Dean is a visual artist with a diverse studio practice encompassing printmaking and inter-media. She has made a significant impact as an artist, mentor and advocate, supporting printmaking in local, national and international forums.
  • Norma Dunning: An accomplished author, scholar and researcher, Dunning works to support emerging writers, particularly those in marginalized positions. She mentors many Indigenous young people through community engagement and poetry workshops.

Community Service
  • Charu Ranjan: A passionate volunteer and inspirational role model to youth and women, Ranjan has worked extensively in education and multiculturalism to help raise funds for education in the Edmonton area, India and areas around the world experiencing disasters.
  • Steven Csorba: An artist and passionate community builder, Csorba has devoted more than 20 years to helping make others strong. Recently, he has been building a safe place for endangered youth with iHuman Youth Society. An advocate for cancer prevention, Csorba also volunteers with November Project Canada, a free fitness movement in Edmonton.
  • Harold Hornig: Hornig is a skilled organizer, helping countless lives through his volunteer work in arts, education, sports and mental health. His leadership has brought hope and healing. Chairing events for arts, schools and other groups, Hornig has helped raise more than a million dollars.
  • Dr. Marilyn J. Hundleby:  In January 2017, Dr. Hundleby and her team opened Wellspring, a non-profit organization offering emotional, social, spiritual and informational support to those living with cancer and the people who care for them. This facility provides support services at no charge, ensuring no one has to face cancer alone.
  • Kathryn Kammermayer: Kammermayer has served on the Callingwood-Lymburn Community League board of directors for the past 20 years. She has devoted thousands of hours to community events and was instrumental in helping raise funds and coordinate building the new playground at St. Alphonsus School.
  • Bernadette (Bernie) Kollman: Kollman is dedicated to building a stronger community, both economically and socially. She founded and served as 10-year chair of an initiative to encourage young women to study higher levels of math and science and pursue careers in information technology.
  • Dr. G.F. MacDonald: Dr. MacDonald was instrumental in building the Center for Lung Health at the Edmonton General. He developed the Breathe Easy Telehealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, allowing rural patients to access specialists via teleconferencing. It is the largest rehabilitation program in Canada and the recipient of national and international attention.

Sports
  • Trish Quinney: A champion gymnast and owner of the Phoenix Gymnastics Centre, Quinney has worked tirelessly to grow gymnastics in Edmonton. She has been coaching since 1992 and runs a recreational gymnastics program which helps more than 5,000 athletes annually.
  • Rob Swart: Swart has been an extraordinary contributor to the Edmonton Rowing Club, serving as president for 11 of his 12 years of dedicated service. An architect, he led a multimillion-dollar effort to upgrade key infrastructure. His commitment and vision have led to the sport’s growth and enriched the lives of current members, as well as future Edmonton rowers.

Performance Awards honour individuals, teams, groups or organizations who have gained outstanding recognition at the national or international level in the past year. More than 150 of Edmonton’s brightest sports stars, teams and coaches were recognized for their recent achievements in a wide variety of sports ranging from singles’ badminton and wrestling, to team bowling and track and field.

Since 1951, the Salute to Excellence Awards have honoured Edmontonians whose personal efforts, dedication and talents have contributed to the unique and diverse fabric of our city.
