The City of Edmonton will close recreation centres to general public access to adhere with the Government of Alberta’s newly announced COVID-19 restrictions.
“We know this is disappointing news for Edmontonians who’ve been using these facilities for the past month,” said City Manager Andre Corbould. “It is critical, though, that we all follow these restrictions in order to bend the curve while the Government of Alberta continues with its vaccination program.”
On April 6, the Government of Alberta announced that the province was returning to Step 1 in the
Path Forward plan. This meant additional restrictions for group and individual fitness activities. The City has cancelled all reservations for those activities.
As a result, Clareview, Terwillegar, The Meadows and Commonwealth community recreation centres are closed. Kinsmen Sports Centre is closed to general public group and individual fitness activities. At this time, we do not know when we will be able to reopen facilities.
Arenas, St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre and Kinsmen Sport Centre will remain open to accommodate only group rentals including schools, youth performance and other youth rentals as is currently allowed under Step 1. Outdoor artificial turf opened April 6, and grass sports fields will open in May to accommodate bookings.
Victoria Golf Course driving range remains open, as does the
Edmonton Valley Zoo’s outdoor areas. We plan to open Rundle Golf Course on April 12 while Riverside and Victoria golf courses are scheduled to open on April 15 with additional COVID-19 safety protocols in place.
All virtual programming including fitness, personal training, nutrition services, safety and aquatic certification programs and art programs will continue.

Also as part of the return to Step 1, all indoor dining in restaurants must end on March 9. While the province has returned to these restrictions, outdoor dining is still allowed. The City continues to offer Temporary Outdoor Patio program for restaurants to access and has a streamlined application process in effect. Edmontonians can continue to go out and safely enjoy their favourite restaurants which have chosen to set up outdoor patios.
