City Council finalizes 2022 property taxes
April 19, 2022

City Council confirmed a 1.9 per cent tax increase for 2022 today after approving spring updates to the City’s operating budget.

“We are pleased to have kept one of the lowest tax increases among major cities in Canada while still offering the services Edmontonians count on,” said Stacey Padbury, Deputy City Manager, Financial and Corporate Services. “These budget updates put the City in a strong position to be able to continue to respond to the financial instability caused by the pandemic and to support Edmontonians as we recover.”

The budget updates maintained the tax increase approved by City Council last December, while balancing changes like increased costs for an enhanced snow and ice pilot with greater than anticipated assessment growth and new COVID-related transit funding from other orders of government.

The spring supplemental operating budget adjustment is the last step in finalizing the annual tax increase. The City will bring forward bylaws in late April to set the tax rates based on the tax increase approved today. Tax notices will be mailed to all property owners on May 24, with property taxes due on June 30.

The 1.9 per cent municipal tax increase will affect property owners differently, depending how their property’s assessed value compares to the market. For an Edmonton home valued at $402,000 that experienced the average assessment change, the 2022 budget will provide services—including fire rescue services, parks, police, recreation centres, road operations and maintenance, and transit—for $2,872 per year, an increase of $160 over 2021.
