City introduces campaign to help keep people biking and driving safely
June 8, 2022

The City of Edmonton is launching a new campaign that, in part, celebrates all the ways Edmontonians move and use our streets.

A particular focus of the campaign will be to increase awareness and understanding of Edmonton’s Safe Passing Bylaw, which came into effect September 2021.

“We want to help Edmontonians travel together safely, and we can all take action to make this happen,” said Jessica Lamarre, Director of Safe Mobility. “In the last ten years, bike trips in Edmonton have nearly doubled. When people bike and use active transportation to get around Edmonton, this helps improve access, reducing vehicle trips and traffic congestion. And that benefits everyone.”

When driving, there are four things to keep in mind when passing people riding bicycles and using scooters on the street:
  • Pass safe, leave space. Leave one metre between you and the person biking where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres where the speed limit is greater than 60 km/h.
  • You may cross the solid yellow line, when safe, to give the required space.
  • People biking or scooting on the street may be riding in the middle of the lane to avoid obstacles and debris close to the curb.
  • Wait until it’s safe to pass. It won’t add much time to your trip.

Edmontonians can learn more and get involved in the campaign using the following resources:
