City of Edmonton outdoor pools’ 2023 season makes a splash
June 1, 2023

The start of City of Edmonton outdoor pools’ 2023 season began with Fred Broadstock Outdoor Pool opening on Tuesday, May 23 and Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool opening, ahead of schedule, on Saturday, May 27. Oliver and Borden outdoor pools will open in the following weeks. This will be the first year since recent funding restraints where four outdoor pools will be open for the full summer season, May to September, weather permitting.

“We know that Edmontonians love spending as much time as possible outdoors during our beautiful summer months. That's why City Council worked with Administration to open up our outdoor pools for the full four months this year,” said Councillor Knack “There’s no better way to cool down on a hot summer day than at one of our outdoor pools with your family and friends.”

In 2022 when outdoor pools were open for July and August, attendance was nearly 96,000 visitors over the two months. On hot summer days, the pools were often at capacity.

Weather permitting, Oliver Outdoor Pool will open on Saturday, June 3 and Borden Natural Swimming Pool on Saturday, June 10. Mill Creek Outdoor Pool remains closed to the public for the duration of the season as rehabilitation continues and is anticipated to reopen in 2024.

Reserve a swim time to ensure fast access or check swim program schedules on movelearnplay.ca prior to visiting. Reservations are not required, but are encouraged to minimize queues and enhance the overall experience. Reservations are not available for lane swimming. Each pool has four timed entry opportunities with drop-in access being dependent on site capacity. Timed entries are available up to 7 days in advance prior to each respective pool’s scheduled opening date.

Outdoor pool admission is included with all City of Edmonton Recreation Centre memberships, including the Summer Youth Pass that is available for purchase starting June 19. Children 12 years and younger can access outdoor pools for free, otherwise regular 2023 admission prices apply.

Council works hard to foster a healthy city. Facilities like our municipal outdoor pools offer a place to restore and relax during the summer months and a place where physical activity meets connection.
