City provides update on Reimagine Services project and service review recommendations

City Manager Andre Corbould today provided an update on Edmonton’s Reimagine Services project, a multi-departmental action plan aimed at helping Edmonton recover from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recession. 

Thorough reviews of five of the corporation’s biggest service areas are being conducted including:  

  • Fire Rescue 
  • Fleet Management and Maintenance
  • Facility Management and Maintenance
  • Park and Open Space Access
  • Recreational and Sport Facility Access/Recreation and Cultural Programming

“The reviews aim to examine our services from the perspective of relevance, efficiency and effectiveness. We have a responsibility to Edmontonians to continually examine the way we deliver programs and services to ensure tax dollar value to Edmontonians,” said Corbould.

The initial phase of the Reimagine Services project has been completed and sixteen shortlist opportunities have been identified for further review through a business case. The opportunities identified for achieving greater efficiencies include a range of strategies from new revenue generation ideas to cost recovery approaches like outsourcing, lifecycle and inventory management and increasing the City’s naturalization practices. Any business case recommending a reduction in service levels will be carefully weighed against potential impacts, as well as available alternatives. The business cases will provide the City with the information required to make intelligent, data-based recommendations and ensure Council is fully informed. 

No decisions have been made about any of the services under review. Today’s update is in keeping with the corporation's commitment to being transparent to City of Edmonton employees and Edmontonians. Considerable work lies ahead before Administration takes recommendations to Council in late June. The City will continue to work with the unions and communicate with employees and the public through this process and as decisions are made.
