City takes first steps to reactivate indoor sport and training

February 10, 2021

Starting February 11, the City of Edmonton will begin implementing a stepped approach to reactivating indoor training and sport support, starting with accommodating school groups, sport organizations, and children’s sport and performance activities with existing bookings to use City facilities.

Seven arenas (Terwillegar, Callingwood, Castle Downs, The Meadows, Clareview, Mill Woods and Kinsmen Twin Arena), two dryland based fitness and sport facilities (Kinsmen Sports Centre & Fieldhouse and St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre), and one aquatic centre (Kinsmen Sports Centre) will begin supporting school programs with a physical activity component, and sport-based organizations focused on training and athletic development.

The City's plan in Step 1 focuses on children and youth sport and physical activities, with the planned introduction of individual one-on-one training classes and programs at a later date.

City staff will work directly with representatives of schools and organizations to coordinate and confirm bookings.

“We know that recreation opportunities provide people of all ages with the chance to exercise their body and mind,” said City Manager Andre Corbould. “We welcome the parents and guardians, coaches, trainers and aspiring athletes who are anxious to resume -- or start -- their passion for movement and play.”

All virtual programming and outdoor winter recreation opportunities will continue.

While City of Edmonton recreation centres and attractions will not open for general public use in Step 1, planning for additional opportunities continues as set out in the Government of Alberta’s The Path Forward plan

Measures remain in place to ensure all public health guidelines are followed. These changes include physical distancing measures, gathering restrictions and hand hygiene. Masks or face coverings are mandatory for anyone entering a facility when not engaged in strenuous physical activity.
