City to enforce Animal Protection Act on interim basis
January 30, 2019

The City of Edmonton will enforce the provincial Animal Protection Act in Edmonton on an interim basis beginning February 1, 2019. City Council’s Community and Public Services Committee today supported a recommendation from Administration that the City will begin enforcement of the Animal Protection Act (APA) as of Feb. 1.

“City administration is ready and prepared to take on animal enforcement responsibilities until we determine a long-term solution,” said David Aitken, Branch Manager of Community Standards and Neighbourhoods. “We will ensure there are no gaps in service in the wake of a recent decision by the Edmonton Humane Society.”

The EHS announced publicly on January 22, 2019, that it was ending enforcement of the APA as of January 31, 2019.

Residents can continue to call EPS in emergency situations regarding animal abuse. Non-emergency calls should go to 311.
