Three outstanding Edmonton businesses are being recognized for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions across their operations during the second annual Corporate Climate Leaders Program (CCLP) Summit.

The awardees are:

  • Chandos Construction: The Corporate Climate Leader of the Year was awarded to Chandos Construction for committing to net zero emissions by 2040 and accounting for embodied carbon in all of their projects. They also diverted over 80 per cent of their waste from construction operations and reduced the energy use at their head office by 70 per cent.

  • Boardwalk R.E.I.T.: The Community Leader Award was awarded to Boardwalk R.E.I.T. for their development of natural and drought resistant green spaces and their creative interpretive signage to educate the community on the value of natural infrastructure.

  • Lafarge Canada: Lafarge was awarded the Employee Engagement Award for their unique employee engagement and recognition programs that helped increase sustainability awareness and action among their employees.

“Local businesses are prioritizing climate action, building a greener and more vibrant Edmonton and inspiring other businesses even during uncertain times,” said Edmonton City Councillor Ashley Salvador. “We are proud to celebrate Edmonton corporations for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and inspiring action in the business sector.”

“The City is working on becoming a carbon neutral corporation by 2040 and a carbon neutral city by 2050,” said Chandra Tomaras, Director of Environment and Climate Resilience. “If all targets set by CCLP members are met, by 2035 GHG emissions will be 207,428 tonnes lower in Edmonton than they were in 2019. That is the equivalent of taking 63,548 cars off the road each year.”

The CCLP facilitates members sharing best practices and lessons learned, exploring emerging business opportunities related to the low carbon economy, mentoring newcomers and celebrating success. Members have made a commitment to take action on climate change through active greenhouse gas (GHG) management across their operations. CCLP currently has over 70 members including eight new members: Avison Young, Alberta Motor Association, BGE Clean Air, Carbon Busters, Electronic Grid Systems, Jack59, North Glenora Community League, and Siemens Canada. The program is currently entering its fifth year.
