Today, 37 new firefighters join the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) team.
“EFRS is committed to attracting the best talent through inclusive practices. Our firefighters have skills beyond physical strength,” said Fire Chief Joe Zatylny. “This includes the ability to effectively communicate, emotional intelligence, customer service focus, empathy and compassion, creative problem solving, resilience, and the ability to work as a team to meet the needs of Edmontonians.”
This newest group of firefighters come from across Canada including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan, and are fluent in English, French, Spanish and Vietnamese.
Prior to joining EFRS, recruits gained experience and skills working in the following industries: medical, law enforcement, oil and gas, construction and trades, education, engineering, retail, transport and wildland firefighting.
“I continue to be impressed by the dedication of our service members, including this recruit class,” said Chief Zatylny. “Our members constantly prove they are able to push through any type of challenge with professionalism, adaptability, and innovation. For that, I am thankful and filled with hope for the future of our fire department.”

These 37 new firefighters will join fire stations throughout the city as they start serving the community this week.
