Starting April 6, the City will begin work on major maintenance projects to help keep our LRT system running safely and smoothly.
Today the City launched
TLC for LRT
to help customers effectively plan their commutes this spring and summer.
TLC for LRT
projects include upgrades to LRT stations, infrastructure and track, as well as revitalization work on the Capital Line that will require the suspension of LRT service to NAIT Station.
The first major project is an April 6 - 27 closure of the Central station platform to upgrade station lighting and ceiling tiles. Trains will still travel through Central Station, but will not stop to pick up or drop off passengers. Customers are advised to use Bay/Enterprise Square or Churchill stations instead.
From April 28 to August 30, crews will complete revitalization work on the 66th Street tunnel between Coliseum and Belvedere stations. During this work, Capital and Metro Line trains will run at a 12-minute frequency during peak hours between Churchill and the northern terminus of each LRT line. As a result, trains will run at a six-minute frequency between Century Park and Churchill during peak hours.
ETS will operate five-car trains during peak hours on both LRT lines to offset the frequency reduction on the Capital Line. However, since NAIT station cannot accommodate five-car trains,
LRT service will be suspended to NAIT
. Metro Line trains will start/end at Kingsway/RAH station, instead of at NAIT. To access the LRT from NAIT or to get to NAIT, customers can take ETS bus routes 8 or 9 in lieu of using NAIT station. These bus routes largely mirror the LRT service between Kingsway/RAH and NAIT stations, and typically run every 15 minutes.
“We understand the Capital Line frequency reduction and suspension of LRT service to NAIT will cause a temporary inconvenience for people travelling to and from north Edmonton,” said Lloyd Meyer, Manager of LRT Operations. “This work is crucial to maintain the safety and functionality of the Capital Line. We thank everyone for their patience as we work on these projects to keep the system running smoothly and efficiently.”
Other projects, starting in May, include upgrades to platform warning tiles at five outdoor LRT stations and some partial LRT closures (Clareview to Churchill, buses will replace LRT) due to Transit-Oriented Development around Stadium Station. Customers are also advised to check ETS social media for the latest LRT maintenance and service changes.
The work at Central Station and the platform warning tile upgrade are two of the 46 projects supported by the
Public Transit Infrastructure Fund
.
