Edmonton property owners will learn some important information about what to expect in their property tax bill this year, as more than 400,000 property assessment notices were mailed today. Property assessments are an important part of the property tax process, as they help to determine the amount of tax each Edmonton property owner will pay this year to support the City’s operating budget.
Once property owners have their assessment notices in hand, they can follow three steps to confirm the accuracy of the notice.

“Assessment values determine property owners’ fair share of property taxes, so it is important that owners review their assessments for accuracy. We would like property owners to review their assessment and contact us if they have any questions, as the best time to address any concerns is now,” said Cate Watt, Assessment and Taxation Branch Manager. “As a property owner, when you receive your 2022 assessment in the mail, we encourage you to review the details and compare your assessed value to similar properties in your neighbourhood.”
Assessments reflect the City’s estimate of a property’s market value—the amount that a property would have sold for on the open market—as of July 1, 2021. It’s an important step in determining residents’ fair share of municipal property taxes and provincial education taxes for the current year.
City Council approved an overall 1.91 per cent tax increase for 2022, but increases or decreases in individual tax bills will depend on how a property value has changed compared to the overall market change.
