Edmontonians will be able to access a number of City of Edmonton services safely, following the public health requirements in the first step of the “Open for Summer” plan, starting June 1.
“The City is balancing its responsibilities for public safety with the opportunities to provide services Edmontonians enjoy. We are enhancing some programs because it is safe to do so, and are planning ahead for the next steps towards recovery,” said Andre Corbould, Edmonton’s City Manager.
Patios
While restaurants were closed for in-person dining, the City continued to take applications for the temporary outdoor patio program. As of May 27, 144 temporary outdoor patio and retail space requests were received and 125 of these requests have been installed. Nine locations are scheduled for installation over the next seven days and the remaining 10 locations are being processed. Curb lane adjustments are being made to accommodate additional space for outdoor dining.
Whyte Avenue curb lane closures will be installed this week, in conjunction with the Old Strathcona Business Association, for additional physical distancing and to support businesses in that area.
A reminder that during stage one, only take-out, delivery and outdoor dining are allowed. Outdoor dining can have a maximum of four people per table from the same household, or two close contacts for those living alone.
Recreation Centres, Attractions and Golf Courses
Beginning June 1, the City’s three
golf courses will offer the option of nine- or 18-hole play and tee-time reservations can include people outside your household or cohort. League play, and adult and youth golf lessons, will resume. Tee times must still be booked through
MoveLearnPlay. Patio and take-away food service will resume.
Recreation centres, outdoor pools, arenas, the Muttart Conservatory, the City Arts Centre, City seniors centres, and indoor spaces at the
Edmonton Valley Zoo remain closed at this time. Outdoor areas at the zoo remain open with admissions booked through
MoveLearnPlay. Face coverings are still required.
Virtual fitness and arts programming will continue online. Classes can be booked through
MoveLearnPlay.
We will continue to work through the plan to reopen the facilities that are permitted to be open once we reach stage two in Alberta’s “Open for Summer” plan.
Funeral Services
Gatherings for outdoor interments at City of Edmonton cemeteries will increase to a maximum of 20 people.
Spray Parks
All 73 available spray parks will be turned on this summer. The first parks will begin splashing water as of June 1 and it will take up to four weeks for all parks to be fully operable. More information can be found at
edmonton.ca/sprayparks.
Big Bin Events
Free Big Bin Events are returning this weekend, June 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Callingwood Recreation Centre (17740 69 Avenue). Citizens can bring their household items too large for regular collection and dispose of them free of charge. Items typically include furniture, household appliances, electronics, tires and yard waste.
We want to remind Edmntonians that preventing COVID-19 is still a priority. Do your part by washing your hands, keeping physically distant and wearing a mask when possible.
