The City of Edmonton invites Edmontonians to share their input on how it regulates activities and behaviours in parks, transit, sidewalks and other public spaces. A survey, available on
engaged.edmonton.ca until May 21, is one of the inputs used to help the City develop a new public spaces bylaw.
The City is reviewing its three primary public spaces bylaws—Public Places Bylaw, Parkland Bylaw and Conduct of Transit Passengers Bylaw—to replace them with one comprehensive bylaw. The updated bylaw will be a consistent set of rules for all public spaces that reflect community safety and well-being, equity, employee safety and red tape reduction.
“Our review of the current bylaws is looking to address any inconsistencies or unintended impacts,” said Gord Cebryk, Deputy City Manager, City Operations. “This survey will help us learn what Edmontonians value and care about when it comes to public spaces in Edmonton, how they are used and how they can make the city better.”
This project was initiated after City Council requested that Administration conduct a full scale review and revision of applicable bylaws that address behaviours and enforcement in transit and other public spaces. A public space is defined as any space in the City of Edmonton that is open and accessible to the general public including parks, transit, sidewalks and other open areas.
Feedback will be used, along with technical analysis, when City Administration reviews the bylaws and provides recommendations to City Council.
