The Town of Qualicum Beach has awarded the contract for the Memorial Avenue Roundabout Construction to Copcan Civil Ltd. The decision was announced at today's Special Council Meeting.
This first step will include the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Memorial Avenue and Highway 19A, as well as the undergrounding of overhead utilities, water main relocations, drainage improvements, and construction of bike lanes/paths. The second step will include the construction of a walkway and viewing platform over the Beach Creek Estuary, and is expected to be completed in 2022.
Copcan Civil Ltd. was selected as general contractors based on the firm’s profile, their experience in the Town's earlier work on the Memorial Avenue Project, and municipal projects similar in scope and budget, as well as demonstrated performance in completing projects on-time and on-budget.
The value of the contract awarded to Copcan Civil Ltd. is $3,289,395.90.
Mayor Brian Wiese commented that "Construction of the Memorial Roundabout is a highly anticipated project. It is the primary connector between two of Qualicum Beach's key assets - the Town's uptown core and its waterfront. With the implementation of the roundabout, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists are able to experience a safer, more user-friendly way to access the waterfront. The Town can also anticipate a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with less idling and improved vehicle movement."
This work is part of the Town's Memorial Avenue upgrades, with other phases of work including the Beach Creek Estuary & Marine Spit Project, Memorial Trunk Sewer Project, Crescent Road / Memorial Avenue Intersection Improvement, Village Way / Memorial Avenue Intersection Improvement, Memorial Avenue Utility Undergrounding, and Stormwater Diversion from the commercial core to the waterfront.
Work on the project will commence in early 2021.
