Outstanding projects earn Edmonton Urban Design Awards

Tonight, the Edmonton Urban Design Awards (EUDA) celebrated the best in urban design in our City. Out of 58 submissions, 11 award-winning urban design projects were honoured with Awards of Excellence or Merit. An additional 11 projects were acknowledged for their child friendly, winter or unique design components. EUDA is a biannual event to recognize individuals, organizations, firms and projects that have contributed to urban design and the City’s quality of life.

“Good design is not a luxury, but an essential component of building a city that will thrive for generations to come,” said Mayor Don Iveson.  

“From the very dramatic to the very subtle, all submissions elevated the tone and quality of urban design,” commented the international jury of design experts.

The international jury selected 11 projects for Awards of Excellence or Merit: 

Urban Architecture
  • Award of Excellence: Borden Park Natural Swimming Pool
  • Award of Merit: The Edge
Student Design
  • Award of Excellence: The Village at Belvedere
Civic Design
  • Award of Excellence: Mechanized River Valley Access
Community Projects 
  • Award of Excellence: Historic McKay Avenue School Playground
Heritage Projects
  • Award of Excellence: Tipton Investment Building
  • Award of Excellence: Oliver Exchange
Urban Design Plans
  • Award of Merit: High Level Line
  • Award of Merit: Alberta Avenue Renewal Urban Design Analysis and Preliminary Design
Urban Fragments
  • Award of Excellence: Carbon Copy
People’s Choice (decided by the majority of the public’s 1,800 votes)

The winners are eligible for consideration at the 2020 National Urban Design Awards hosted by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Four previous Edmonton winners: Regenerating Rossdale (Student Project 2015), Impose (Student Project 2015), Capital Health Centre (2009) and the Transition mural (2011) secured national awards.

The jury also recognized ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ and the Cambridge Tunnel Rehabilitation as honourable mentions for their unique and important design considerations. Child Friendly Edmonton recognized the Capilano Branch Library, the Historic McKay Avenue Playground, the Mechanized River Alley Access and the Royal Alberta Museum for their child friendly design elements. WinterCity Edmonton recognized five projects for their outstanding consideration for winter design: Winter Outside in Downtown Edmonton, Pehonan Drive, the High Level Line, the Mechanized River Valley Access and 124 Street Helen Nolan Park.
