Root for Trees volunteers to plant 2,000 trees on National Tree Day

September 25, 2024

Today, the City of Edmonton and Tree Canada are celebrating National Tree Day, with over 200 volunteers from the Root for Trees program planting 2,000 trees and participating in interactive activities at Hermitage Park.

“Celebrating National Tree Day with a large planting event is an opportunity to celebrate nature while contributing to the City’s goal of planting two million trees by 2030,” said Kortney Tompkins, Naturalization Team Lead, City Operations. “Our volunteers are passionate about expanding Edmonton’s urban forest and this event will contribute to the 32,000 trees being planted by volunteers in Edmonton this year.”

The Root for Trees planting event is one of several Tree Canada events across Canada on National Tree Day.

“Tree Canada’s Community Tree Grants program provides funding and technical expertise for community greening, innovation and stewardship initiatives,” said Nicole Hurtubise, CEO, Tree Canada. "We're delighted that, in collaboration with CN Rail, we've been able to contribute to Edmonton's tree planting project, ensuring long-lasting benefits for residents in their everyday environments."

Root for Trees is the City of Edmonton's volunteer tree-planting initiative that increases tree and shrub planting throughout the city with the help of corporations, local businesses, community groups, families and individual residents. Since 2013, Root for Trees volunteers have planted 323,484 trees and shrubs in Edmonton.
