Today, at the recommendation of City administration, the Emergency Advisory Committee has decided not to renew the State of Local Emergency (SOLE). While the SOLE was not renewed, it can be put back into place with very short notice if it is deemed necessary. The SOLE was first declared on March 20 to allow for expedited decision making in order to protect the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Choosing not to renew the SOLE is as a result of the low number of active cases and hospitalizations, and the City’s ability to manage the current state without the declaration in place. This decision does not change the need for residents to follow all public health orders and guidelines.
Interim City Manager Adam Laughlin noted that while the lapsing of the SOLE may be seen as a sign that progress has been made and that responses are less urgent, it is critical that Edmontonians remain vigilant and continue to take the necessary actions to reduce the risk of COVID-19. “The SOLE not being renewed today is a direct result of the good work Edmontonians have done to limit the spread of the virus,” said Laughlin. “That work needs to continue as we proceed through relaunch.”
The Edmonton EXPO Centre will remain open to enable Edmonton’s vulnerable population to practice physical distancing and receive medical services if necessary.
Not renewing the SOLE does not mean the City will promptly return to pre-COVID operations. The City will continue to advance with Relaunch recommendations using a balanced approach of public health and safety requirements, operational resources, budget constraints, public compliance and in alignment with Relaunch principles.
In addition, the City announced additional new Relaunch activities.
Final new shared streets set to open
The last of planned Shared Street locations will be opened this week. They are:
- 113 Street - from 111 Avenue to 105 Avenue (June 2)
- 109 Avenue - from 118 Street to 109 Street (June 2)
- 109 Avenue - from 109 Street to 106 Street (June 2)
- 96 Street - from 111 Avenue to 103a Avenue (June 5)
- 108a Avenue - from 96 Street to 94 Street (June 5)
There are currently 22 Shared Streets locations giving Edmontonians additional space to practice safe physical distancing as they move around their neighborhoods.
Masks to be available at transit locations
Alberta Health Services has provided 500,000 non-medical face masks that ETS will distribute to residents. More information will be made available in the coming days on the process and logistics.
