Town of Qualicum Beach Council announced on February 24, 2021, a directive to engage the Province for use of the Town’s south airport lands, for a period of six months past the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, for a temporary, all-day cold weather shelter, to aid a maximum of 15 individuals.
Communication with BC Housing in March of 2021, confirmed that they would not proceed with the use of the south airport lands for these purposes, for the following reasons:
When BC Housing staff looked at the location, we decided not to proceed. Housing for people experiencing homelessness needs to meet people where they are at, providing connection to the resources that people need to work towards living a healthy, stable life. Access to community services is key for people without homes, but so is feeling part of a neighbourhood. With a remote site, there is no access to services, no regular transit access, and no integration with the community, which is essential for people who are working towards a healthy, stable life.
As such, we confirm that the Qualicum Beach Airport lands will not be used for the temporary cold-weather shelter.
We will continue to collaborate with our partnering municipalities to find suitable lands in the Oceanside region to temporarily house our most vulnerable community members during these unprecedented times.
