The City is Making Space for new perspectives on zoning with first-ever podcast
May 31, 2022

The City of Edmonton launched its first-ever podcast, Making Space, as part of the Zoning Bylaw Renewal Initiative. This five-episode series, released every Tuesday until June 28, tells the stories of people and communities whose lives have been impacted by how we plan our cities—and the hard-won lessons of how we can make Edmonton more equitable for everyone.

“We wanted to tell the stories of how zoning and planning impacts our communities,” said Livia Balone, Director of the Zoning Bylaw Renewal Initiative. “Exploring zoning’s dual legacy—of discrimination and promoting the public good—is key to ensuring we move forward as a city and make space for everyone who calls Edmonton home.”

Listeners will learn how and why the City regulates land development by exploring the ways different areas around Edmonton embody the complexities of zoning.

Podcasts are a new venture for the City of Edmonton and are the ideal format to discuss complex topics such as land use planning, zoning and equity. “Unlike a blog, podcasts provide the space for people to tell their own stories, in their own voices,” said Balone. “The series will hopefully illustrate the long-lasting impacts of land-use planning and inspire all Edmontonians to work together towards building a vibrant, healthy and inclusive city.”

Through five 30-minute episodes, the series features interviews with various subject matter experts:
  1. The Million Dollar Parking Lot, featuring Carola Cunningham and Lyla Peters
  2. Whose Home?, featuring Susan McGee and Colton Kirsop
  3. At Your Discretion, featuring Chris Hoit and Katherine Pihooja
  4. Connecting the Dots, featuring Cherie Klassen and Michael Strong
  5. What Does Better Look Like?, featuring Chris Dulaba
