As the Edmonton Metropolitan Region continues to position itself as Canada’s Hydrogen Hub and a global leader in hydrogen technology and innovation, the City of Edmonton is working to create a prosperous low-carbon economy.

City’s Request for Proposals for a Hydrogen Fuelling Station
The City is collaborating with the Alberta Motor Transport Association and Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB partner Transition Accelerator on a Request for Proposals (RFP) to build a hydrogen fuelling station. The City’s station will enhance efforts to strengthen the region’s hydrogen economy by providing a supply of hydrogen fuel to meet growing demand. Our collaborators will help to review the proposals.
“Edmonton's RFP to build fuelling infrastructure highlights the incredible opportunity our hydrogen economy has to drive investment into the Edmonton region and Alberta,” said Edmonton Global CEO Malcolm Bruce. “The Edmonton region is leading Canada’s hydrogen transition, and this milestone is significant to building a vast roadmap for hydrogen across the region. This is just the beginning of decarbonizing our commercial transportation sector and accelerating Canada’s transition to net zero.”
The station will supply hydrogen fuel for the City’s hydrogen transit buses and the private transportation sector as it transitions to heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles. The station will be located at the Centennial Garage near Anthony Henday and along the highway between Edmonton and Calgary, which enables the movement of goods in and out of the Edmonton region.
City’s Hydrogen Transit Bus
The City’s first hydrogen transit bus is scheduled to go into service this summer. The City has recently started testing the new hydrogen technology for Edmonton’s weather conditions.
“We are focusing on transportation as one of the most impactful ways to transition to hydrogen, including creating demand for it and driving investment in the Edmonton region’s hydrogen economy,” said Eddie Robar, Branch Manager of Fleet and Facility Services at the City of Edmonton. “The City’s fuelling station will support Alberta’s emerging hydrogen fuelling network and growing hydrogen industry.”
Alberta Motor Transport Association’s Board Chair Doug Paisley said the City’s fuelling station is a positive development for the Edmonton Region and the province.
“Hydrogen fuelling stations support AMTA’s projects by providing access to alternative fuel for commercial trucks and diversifying energy opportunities that are critical to a robust economy and help Canada reach its net zero goals by 2050,” said Paisley. “This technology also shows investors that Alberta recognizes the importance of reducing industry's impact on the environment, and a shared commitment to building a sustainable, efficient, resilient, and responsible supply chain.”
The City’s RFP for the hydrogen fuelling station will be posted on the
Alberta Purchasing Connection website on Friday, April 28, 2023. The successful proponent will be announced in the fall of 2023.
