AITC-C LAUNCHES NEW EVENT TO ENGAGE URBAN STUDENTS IN AGRI-FOOD CAREERS


(Headingley, Manitoba, August 28, 2019 ) –  Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) will soon be seeding interest in agriculture among urban high school students by hosting a series of one-day events.
 
Through the   thinkAG  initiative, the non-profit organization is planning a series of high-energy events in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver this fall and winter to expose more than 1,500 urban high school students and their teachers to the myriad of career opportunities in Canada’s agri-food sector.
 
With participation from AITC-C’s provincial member organizations, the three engAGe events will show students that opportunities in agriculture extend well beyond farming and into the fields of science, technology, engineering, math, business and much more.  
 
“Although agriculture accounts for one out of every eight jobs in Canada, and people have very positive opinions about the sector overall, a recent study found that only thirty-two percent of people would make a point of recommending a career in the field,” according to Johanne Ross, executive director of AITC-C, in launching  engAGe .
 
“As one of the most significant industries to Canada’s economy, agriculture has some work to do to ensure that youth understand the many career opportunities available to them,” Ross said. “They will hear from passionate people working in this sector who want to ensure youth are aware that whether they want to work as an economist, lawyer, mechanic, doctor or graphic designer, there is a place for them in agriculture.” 
 
All three events will offer captivating guest speakers, inspiring breakout sessions and an exciting culinary experience. Through these experiential opportunities, students will be guided to discover an innovative, diverse, technologically advanced and fun agriculture and food industry that is unlike anything they may have imagined. 
 
“Whether it’s science, technology, marketing or retail, agriculture is a great connector for people in a variety of fields,” said Michael Hoffort, president and CEO of Farm Credit Canada, which is the main sponsor for the events.
 
“As students consider their own career paths, engAGe is an exciting chance to discover what attracts so many people to Canada’s agriculture industry either on the farm or beyond,” Hoffort said. “At FCC we look forward to what the next generation brings to agriculture and engAGe is a perfect place to ignite that interest.”

AITC-C LANCE UN NOUVEL ÉVÉNEMENT VISANT À ENGAGER LES ÉTUDIANTS DES VILLES DANS DES EMPLOIS DE L’AGROALIMENTAIRE

 
(Headingley, Manitoba, le 28 août 2019 ) –  Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) suscitera bientôt l’intérêt chez les étudiants du secondaire qui étudient l’agriculture en organisant une série d’événements d’une journée.
 
Par le biais de son initiative thinkAG , l’organisme sans but lucratif prévoit d’organiser une série d’événements dynamiques à Toronto, Montréal et Vancouver cet automne et cet hiver, en exposant plus de 1500 étudiants du secondaire et leurs enseignants à la myriade d’opportunités professionnelles dans le secteur agroalimentaire du Canada.
 
Avec la participation des organismes provinciaux membres d’AITC-C, les trois événements engAGe montreront aux étudiants que les opportunités dans le domaine agricole ne se limitent pas seulement à l’agriculture, mais qu’elles englobent aussi les domaines de la science, de la technologie, de l’ingénierie, des maths, des affaires et bien d’autres encore.  
 
 
En tant que l’une des industries les plus importantes pour l’économie du Canada, il reste encore beaucoup de travail à faire pour que les jeunes réalisent les nombreuses opportunités de carrière qui s’offrent à eux dans ce domaine, explique encore Johanne. Ils entendront parler ces personnes passionnées qui travaillent dans le secteur qui veulent que les jeunes sachent que s’ils souhaitent travailler en tant qu’économiste, avocat, mécanicien, médecin ou graphiste… il y a de la place pour eux. »
 
Les 3 événements présenteront des intervenants captivants, des séances d’information inspirantes et une expérience culinaire passionnante. Grâce à ces opportunités, les étudiants découvriront une industrie agroalimentaire novatrice, diversifiée, technologiquement avancée et amusante différente de tout ce qu’ils auraient pu imaginer.
 
« Que ce soit la science, la technologie, le marketing ou la vente au détail, l’agriculture est un sujet qui touche tout le monde, peu importe le champ d’intérêt. En cette période où les élèves pensent à leur parcours professionnel, engAGe est une occasion intéressante de découvrir ce qui fait que tant de personnes sont attirées par l’industrie agricole canadienne que ce soit sur la ferme ou ailleurs » a exprimé Michael Hoffort, président-directeur général de Financement agricole Canada (FAC). « À FAC, nous avons hâte de voir ce que va apporter la prochaine génération à l’agriculture, et engAGe est l’endroit idéal pour éveiller cet intérêt. »
