ELK GROVE – In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the impactful “Go Safely Movement,” the OTS invites all Californians to become a traffic safety champion, be more engaged in traffic safety and effect positive change within their communities.
Since its launch on May 15, 2023, this dedicated initiative has galvanized interest in taking specific actions that contribute to safer roads and communities statewide.
WHAT OTS DIRECTOR BARBARA ROONEY SAID: "The success of the ‘Go Safely Movement’ over the past year speaks volumes about Californians' dedication to prioritizing road safety. As we continue working towards our shared goal of safer roads for all, it is important to create a safety culture where zero deaths is the only acceptable number. Let's work together to keep the momentum going and make sure that every Californian reaches their destination safely and without incident."
TRAFFIC SAFETY CHAMPION PROGRAM:
- Gain access to webinars, informational sessions, and other resources that equip you with the tools needed to advocate for safer roads effectively.
- Hundreds of individuals have responded to the call by signing up as traffic safety champions, driving proactive involvement and community-led change through a variety of roles.

Social Media Influencer: Promotes traffic safety on social media platforms by posting messages, visuals, and event updates, encouraging community participation in the Go Safely Movement.

Community Volunteer: Works with a traffic safety-focused non-profit or community-based organization.

Community Advocate: Engages with elected representatives, attends relevant meetings, and collaborates on projects aimed at improving traffic safety in their community.

Community Organizer: Plans and executes traffic safety events, hosts community meetings and establishes working groups to discuss and find solutions to improve traffic safety.
GO SAFELY MOVEMENT:
Nearly 2,500 individuals actively involved through community call-to-action survey to create safer roads for all.
Eleven community-based organizations committed as “allies in action” to promote a strong traffic safety culture in their communities through education and outreach.

New messages on social media in English and Spanish encouraging people to commit to responsible road behaviors and join the movement as a traffic safety champion.
Toolkit of resources for organizations, businesses and community-based organizations to amplify support for safer roads.
WHY THIS MATTERS: Our nation is experiencing a road safety crisis. In California alone, more than 4,400 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, or about 12 people every day. Traffic safety deserves our undivided attention. Let’s GO! Let’s commit to specific actions to improve safety on our roads.
