Principal Shares Academic  Vision At IPA Open House

Dr. Charcia Nichols, principal of Ivy Preparatory Academy Kirkwood School For Girls, told parents at Open House recently that administrators will get tough on school attendance to ensure that scholars are coming to school regularly, and on time for important instruction.

Dr. Nichols said that habitual absenteeism counts against student performance and school efficiency scores on the state’s College and Career Readiness Performance Index. The state Department of Education mandates that schools report missed days for students who are absent for six days or more. In the first few weeks of school, more than 150 scholars at IPA Kirkwood were checked out of classes; more than 200 were late, the principal said.

“After the first three absences, you will get a phone call from your teacher,” Dr. Nichols said. “Then, on that fourth one, you are going to get a letter to let you know that you are about to hit six.

“At six absences, we ask you to come in and develop a plan,” she added.” If that doesn’t work, it’s a truancy referral. I have to be honest with you, we have to do this. We have got to all be accountable. I don’t want anyone saying, ‘My child failed class.’ And I look, and they’ve got 20 absences. Please make sure our babies are here.”

Dr. Nichols has high expectations for scholars and staff. She announced an aggressive plan to increase the number of students who test at the proficient and distinguished levels on the state exams.

"We will have an urgent focus on student achievement," she said. "We have practically a brand new staff at Ivy. We have professional development for teachers every Wednesday. The expectations are that teachers are supposed to teach and students are supposed to learn. Administrators are expected to lead, and parents are expected to be involved."

The principal said that she needs parents to bring their scholars to school, and make sure that they are on time to help make this a successful academic year. "Remember, 8 a.m. is late," she said.

IPA Kirkwood has a "continuous improvement" plan that focuses on strategic organization management, culture and climate, and student achievement. The principal said that she needs parents to bring their scholars to school, and make sure that they are on time to help make this a successful academic year. IPA Kirkwood has launched a new curriculum that teaches state and national student performance standards. It is linked to standardized assessments.

The school purchased new testing software that allows teachers to use their smartphones to instantly score Scantron Bubblesheets filled in by scholars.

“It is real-time data,” Dr. Nichols said. “You don’t have to wait, and the teachers don’t have to wait. It grades it already. ”

Teachers also will be training to deliver a positive discipline program that reinforces good behavior. Students and teachers will be recognized with gift cards for outstanding achievement in teaching and learning. “We want to recognize them and encourage them to continue the good work."

A Word From Our Principal
Dr. Charcia Nichols, a veteran educator with more than 21 years of experience, has been hired as the new principal of Ivy Preparatory Academy Kirkwood School for Girls. Nichols
i s an accomplished teacher and administrative leader.  IPA Executive Director Alisha Morgan said Dr. Nichols “has the vision, experience, determination, and professional network” to make IPA Kirkwood one of the top school for girls in Atlanta.

It is so hard to get up sometimes at 4:30 a.m. when you don’t go to bed until 11 p.m. the night before.

I hit snooze about three times, and before long it’s 5 a.m. I have 30 minutes to feed the dog, fix my breakfast, fix our lunch, get my son up and drop him off at my mom’s.

Although I get to school by 7 a.m., my goal is to be here by 6:45 am. At 7 a.m., I think I am tardy.  As I reflect, I have the TARDY TENDENCY. I do things in the morning that could be done the day before. When I realize I’m tardy, I stress out, drive fast, and put myself danger. I must stop the TARDY TENDENCY.

As a parent, think about your daily routine in the morning. Here are a few things for you to think about to avoid the TARDY TENDENCY:

  • Don't go to bed until all is ready.  Leave ONLY what is necessary to do in the morning for the morning. Do the rest the afternoon/evening before. Do not leave it all to do right before bed as that delays bed time and people are tired and crabby then. Example: Everyone's clothing should be laid out (yes, even high school kids and adults!) Backpack/jacket/shoes by the door. Breakfast dishes/food should be waiting on the table. All forms, homework, etc. should be in the  backpack. School lunches should be made.

  •  Set two alarms. Be sure at least one is battery powered in case the electricity goes out. Set one right beside your bed and a noisier alarm far away, so you have to get up to shut it off. Every child should have their own. (Give everyone 15 minutes more time than you think they need.)

  • Establish routine and do not deviate from it. Sharing a bathroom? Establish a schedule.

  • Be calm. Use a quiet voice. Expect the same of children. If your routine needs to be altered, or if you are running late, make sure you have breakfast you can eat on-the-go like granola bars, bananas, and small boxes of cereals.

  • Be realistic. Life happens. No one is perfect. We are all late sometimes. Do the best you can and move on, but do not assume that it doesn't matter that your child is late for school. Every minute of learning counts. You're helping yourself and your child gain control and be independent and organized when you are on time.
