Rector's Ramblings

I have always loved being in nature, and from a young age I was always sensitive to matters that impacted the environment. I don't really know why. We weren't an environmentally progressive family in any particular sense, nor did I spend too much time in the woods or at the beach in such a way that it attuned me to nature, it was just a part of my interests from a young age. When I first went to college, I was an environmental science major. I changed majors for two reasons; one, I ended up not liking chemistry, and two, because science is hard to excel at, when you have a nearly full-time job at the same time.
Regardless, I've always loved being in nature and keeping an eye on nature, which brings me to this Rambling, in which I hope to highlight two upcoming events. First, on April 21, a Saturday afternoon, there will be an event called, Down to the River to Pray, here on St. Simons. It is an afternoon of paddling on local waters followed by a potluck and Eucharist here at Christ Church.  The event is sponsored by our Diocesan Creation Care Committee and by Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL), an ecumenical organization that works with churches to promote care of creation in various and easy ways. One of the things they do is give free energy audits to churches in order to help them find ways to reduce their spending on utilities. We received one of their audits a couple of years ago and welcomed their strategies to cut our costs.

Colonial Worship Service - This Sunday, April 15th, at St. Ignatius

Glynn County's 13th Annual Patriots Day Celebration is being held on St. Simons Island the weekend of April 13-15th. The  celebration  is sponsored by the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution; the Brunswick Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; Fort Frederica Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; and the Marshes of Glynn Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. The celebration culminates in the Colonial Worship Service, which is being held at Christ Church's St. Ignatius Chapel on Sunday morning, April 15th, at 9:00 am. This worship service is set in a historical context during the time-frame of the American Revolution (1775-1783).  Many worshipers are dressed in Colonial attire, and the hymns, anthem and sermon reflect the culture and sentiments of America in the 18th century. All are welcome to attend. Period attire is optional.

Episcopal Church 101 is a six-week study for anyone wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church, either in preparation for being confirmed, received or reaffirmed (wonder what the difference is among those?) or simply to answer those "why do we" questions. The class meets on Wednesdays, at 5:45 pm in the Parish Hall. If you are interested in joining this group or would like to know more, please contact Mtr. Becky at or call the church office at 912-638-8683.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
Dr. Bob Brown's adult Sunday morning class will finish up their New Testament study in April. On May 6 the class begins a study of Adam Hamilton's new book Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Troubled Times . Everyone is welcome. Women's Study Group
On Thursday, April 19th, the Women's Study Group will begin reading The Burden Is Light, Eugenia Price's autobiography. The cornerstone of The Eugenia Price Treasury of Faith, The Burden Is Light is the author's soul-searching account of her discovery of Jesus Christ. The group meets on Thursdays, at 11:30 am. Please contact Mtr. Ashton at if you are interested in joining!

EYC Activities

This coming weekend, April 14 - 15, Honey Creek will receive a well-deserved sprucing-up as youth and their sponsors will participate in Toil 'N Sweat. Friday night will be a time of play and worship and preparation. Then on Saturday, all will spend most of the day working on Honey Creek! Jobs may include caring for the grounds, working on buildings, or other things as directed by the Honey Creek staff. Christ Church will be represented in this work by the Brown family - Hugh, Kay and Waverly!

ECW Scholarship
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.
"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.
Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here  and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

African Team Ministries
African Team Ministries will have a  display  of beautiful crafts available for purchase for the next two Sundays (March 15th and 22nd) in Christ Church Parish House. African Team Ministries is a Christian ministry working as an intermediary between African and American churches. They provide funding for orphan and refugee relief missions and evangelism in East Africa.  The support they receive is sent directly to partnering Bishops to provide school fees, tuition, books, and uniforms. This support ensures that the children receive an education and a measure of stability needed to rebuild their minds. Currently, there are children registered for sponsorship in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Your purchase of crafts and jewelry will help fund their education. For more information, visit
Backpack Buddies
The Backpack Buddies  will be packing again on Wednesday, April 18th, at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall. If you've got the time, please join them. They're always happy to welcome new folks on the assembly line! Contact Susan Shipman at for more information.

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church!

Christ Church needs docents and greeters! As the team of volunteer docents has diminished over the last few months, due to illness and retirements, so have the number of days we are able to keep the church open to visitors.  Currently, we have a skeleton crew of volunteers to man the church Tuesday through Sunday in the afternoons. After March, we will definitely need some additional folks to help. You can assist by volunteering to docent once a month from 2 to 5 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on this wonderful opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. Contact: Fred Collins at to become a docent.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Seeks Volunteers

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore program is looking for volunteers to work in its store in Brunswick. Volunteers can work in a variety of positions, from receiving donations, to checking out customers. For more information, please call 912-265-7455 or email You may download a volunteer waiver form here.

Frederick Cousins Guild Meeting
The Frederick Cousins Guild will meet on Tuesday, April 17th at 6:30 pm, at Jackie Turbidy's home, at 113 Biltmore.  Guild member, Pam Hamilton, will discuss her life as a physician, particularly in the days before it was common for women to become doctors. It should be really interesting!
At the March meeting, discussion centered on how to disperse the funds from the Oyster Roast and it was decided to donate to the Compass Rose Society, Hospice of the Golden Isles, the Farm at Oatlands and Very Special Arts, Glynn County. Some interesting programs are also in the plans for next year. The Guild will hold its Spring Party in May, and details will be available at next Tuesday's meeting. An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
