Rector's Ramblings

I had a midday ice cream earlier this week. Yes, that's worth rambling about, because it's incredibly rare. It didn't occur to me, until it occurred to me, that I don't eat ice cream in the middle of the day, and now I am wondering why! And when I say it's rare to eat ice cream in the middle of the day, I can't remember the last time (when I wasn't on vacation) that I saw an ice cream stand and got some ice cream out of the blue. On days off and weekends, I've been known to have a beer with lunch, yet that's still a rare occurrence. Eating midday ice cream is, for whatever reason, even more rare.

So what happened this time? Well, another unusual event happened, which set up the opportunity for ice cream. Because of the virus I was fighting last week, I had to reschedule the haircut that is always scheduled for every third Friday morning, my day off. I had to take what was open when I rescheduled, which meant midday, on a weekday. As I sat there in the village getting my hair cut, I looked across the street and it registered that I was looking at my favorite ice cream spot, Moo Cow. I like Moo Cow because they have two good no-sugar-added offerings that they rotate between; they always have either almond amaretto, or a raspberry swirl. Maybe it was some sort of post stomach bug craving, but I thought, "I'm going to get some ice cream after my haircut," and I did. (It was the almond amaretto this time...)

EYC Activities

EYC Rooted and Relevant

Youth and adults alike experienced a moving and spirit-filled time of worship this past Sunday, at the EYC Rooted and Relevant service in the Parish Hall. Waverly Brown served as the Lector and Kat Chitty read the Gospel. Beautiful music played by Ladd Rector on piano, Brad Hamil on guitar and lead by vocalist Trina Meade, accompanied the service. The homily, entitled The Good Shepherd, was delivered by Mtr. Ashton Williston.

Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic

The Diocese of Georgia will sponsor a trip for youth to Iglesia Episcopal San José in Boca Chica from June 23-30, 2018. The missioners on this team will conduct Vacation Bible School classes at two nearby Episcopal churches, Santo Tomás in Gautier and Monte de Sión in the Altagracia barrio of Boca Chica. Christ Church EYC members Kat Chitty and Waverly Brown will be part of the mission team. If you would like to help sponsor this trip, please send checks to the Diocesan Office (611 East Bay Street, Savannah GA 31401) marked Attn: Joshua Varner and noted with "Youth Mission Trip Supplies". If you prefer to donate physical items, here are some suggestions: Markers (Crayons are heavier and therefore not preferred), Popsicle Sticks (wide are better than narrow), Pipe Cleaners (also called chenille sticks in this day and age), Deflated Kickballs with a hand air pump and needles to use once we arrive, Frisbees, Tissue Paper (can be used to make paper flowers), Construction Paper (not lots of this, because it is also heavy), Craft Scissors, Stickers, Slap Bracelets (make sure there are enough for several hundred kids), Bubbles, Scratch Art Paper (black, when you scratch it color is revealed), Elmer's Glue (or equivalent), Glue sticks.  Contact: Josh Varner at jvarner@gaepiscopal.org

Send-Off for Youth Missioner Brad Hamil

Please join us for the Church Picnic at Honey Creek on Sunday, May 20th,  when we will honor Brad Hamil for his four years of service at Christ Church. Later that day, he will celebrate with the youth group at their final meeting of the season. We give thanks for the years that Brad has shared his gifts and talents with our parish.

ECW

ECW Scholarship
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.

"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.

Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here  and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

Street Beat Graduates
Street Beat is a ministry in Brunswick to homeless teenagers. Glynn Episcopal Ministries is collecting notes and cards of encouragement and support for this year's graduates. These are kids who don't have families to celebrate their graduation and support their entry into college, tech school or military service. Notes of support and gift cards can be dropped off at the Christ Church Parish Office. Thank you for supporting these young people who have overcome hardship and obstacles. They are an inspiration! For more information about how you can help, contact Susan Shipman at susanshipman@att.net.

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church!

Christ Church needs docents and greeters! As the team of volunteer docents has diminished over the last few months, due to illness and retirements, so have the number of days we are able to keep the church open to visitors.  Currently, we have a skeleton crew of volunteers to man the church Tuesday through Sunday in the afternoons. You can assist by volunteering to docent once a month from 2 to 5 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on this wonderful opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. Contact: Fred Collins at fredwcollins@yahoo.com to become a docent.

Picnic at Honey Creek - May 20th

The annual  Christ Church picnic  at Honey Creek camp and conference center will take place on Sunday, May 20th. All in the Christ Church family are encouraged to join in this time of reflection, reconnection and recreation. At 11:30 am we will have our Bluegrass Eucharist in the chapel, featuring  Marshgrass , followed by lunch and family time. A generous benefactor has made a donation that will pay for lunch for all, so there will be no cost to attend the picnic. However, you must still register to come, so that we can have an accurate head count for meal preparation. (Donations are welcome, too.)  Please bring your lawn chairs, softball equipment, lawn games and coolers of cold beverages to share. (For those unable to attend the picnic, Holy Eucharist will be offered at Christ Church at 8:00 and 9:15 am, and Morning Prayer will be said at 11:15 am.)

To register to come to the church picnic, click here or call the office at 912-638-8683 to be added to the list.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
