Rector's Ramblings

Well now. Here I am back from vacation and General Convention getting caught up on three weeks of emails and messages and putting out all the little fires that spark up when one is out of the office for a time. Since I'm still transitioning back into the "real world," I find myself still processing our time away and the wonderful experiences we had on our western road trip. For example, I have not been able to shake the juxtaposition of the grandness of what has been accomplished by the creator and the created, alike.

The highlight of our travels was visiting the Grand Canyon, although some of the other natural wonders we visited aren't far behind it. The Grand Canyon was as impressive as I hoped it would be, and we loved the colors as they changed throughout the day. We managed to be at the rim for both a sunrise and a sunset, to hike down into the Canyon and back out - at least a portion of the distance down and back. I learned a lot about the assumed formation of the Canyon and its rock, a combination of tectonic upheaval and erosion working all at the same time, over millions of years. Its seeming permanence and an awareness of its constant transformation is ever present at the same time. It was breathtaking.

Back-to-School Backpack Blessing

On Sunday, August 5th, at the 9:15 service, we will be blessing the children's backpacks and commissioning our Sunday school teachers. Please come, if you are student, no matter your age, and bring your backpack so we can bless you, as you begin a new school year!

Christian Formation is an important ministry at Christ Church. The Sunday school teachers volunteer their time and efforts to deepen the faith and understanding of the Gospel for our children and adults. If you are a Sunday school teacher, please join us at the 9:15 service as we commission you to start a new program year!

Kreimborg Cross Presentation
The Kreimborg Cross will be presented this coming Sunday, August 5, 2018, at the 9:15 am worship service.  The cross is given by Tony and Sarah Kreimborg in honor and memory of their son, Evan, who faithfully served as an acolyte at Christ Church.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class is studying Adam Hamilton's new book Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Troubled Times.  Everyone is welcome. Classes are in the parish house from 10:30 until 11:15 am and will continue to meet over the summer.  For more information, contact Bob at [email protected] .

Men's Study Group
The Wednesday morning Men's Study Group is studying A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, by Tom Gjelten. A Nation of Nations is  "an incisive look at immigration, assimilation, and national identity" ( Kirkus Reviews ) and the landmark immigration law that transformed the face of the nation more than fifty years ago, as told through the stories of immigrant families in one suburban county in Virginia. Books are available in the church office for $13. For  more information, please contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] .

Cursillo at Honey Creek

Cursillo is a Spanish word which means "a short course in Christianity." Twice each year, the Diocese of Georgia holds a Cursillo at Honey Creek. Beginning on Thursday evening, October 11, 2018, you can experience a weekend of resting in God's reassuring love and peace which passes all understanding. You will hear talks from clergy and lay people in the diocese, attend services in the beautiful chapel at Honey Creek, and enjoy fellowship and meaningful conversations with other participants throughout the diocese.

If you are interested in attending the October 11-14 Cursillo at Honey Creek, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] or at 912-638-8683. If you would like to be part of the Cursillo team, please call Rita Spalding at 912-270-2725. More information about Cursillo and the registration forms for both participants and team members can be found here.

Education for Ministry Classes Beginning

Education for Ministry, a theological education course for lay ministers, will begin meeting at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Brunswick, on Wednesday, September 5. The class will meet every week at 5:30 pm and is open to all who are eighteen years old and older. Mentors for the program are Rita Spalding and Maggie Watkins.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 80,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together. Get more information about EfM here.

If you are interested in joining this study program, please contact Mtr. Ashton at  [email protected] or at 912-638-8683.

Youth

Acolyte Festival - August 11-12

The annual Diocesan Acolyte Festival will take place on August 11-12, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, in Tifton, Georgia. This is one of our only Diocesan Youth Events that is geared for participants all the way from Grade 3 through Grade 12, so it is a wonderful chance to bring everyone together. (Click here to read details about the event that include information and registration links.)

During the festival, acolytes will have opportunities to learn everything from how to light a thurible, to how to serve at the Altar, and even how to process down the aisle! They are asked to bring vestments and a congregational banner so that their congregation can be represented in the procession on Sunday morning.

The cost for the event is $50 before August 1 and $60 after August 1. As always, cost should never be an obstacle to participating in a Diocesan Youth Event. Please let the Rev. Joshua Varner know if cost is a concern and he will be happy to work with you. For more information about the event, please contact Joshua at 336-317-0371 or at [email protected]

Outreach

The Backpack Buddies Are Packing Again!BackpackBuddies

A big thank you to all who have become Backpack Buddy sponsors! We have over 100 children sponsored thus far. Each year, we feed around 200 disadvantaged children, so we are hoping for even more folks to participate.  You can sponsor weekend food for a child for the entire school year for $100, or for one semester for $50. (Read a more detailed report about the Backpack Buddies here . Get the statistics for children who are at risk for hunger in Glynn County here .)

Packing Time!

For those of you who already volunteer as Backpack Buddy packers and for anyone who'd like to join us, it's time to crank up the food bag assembly line! We'll be packing on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall.  We were blessed this summer to have a number of kids who were eager to pack food bags for less fortunate youth. In June VBS participants packed for us, and during July we've had other youth who, along with their visitors, have enthusiastically packed bags.  Another bonus this summer has been the availability of pre-packed snack boxes from Second Harvest's warehouse for about 20 cents each. We provided two snack boxes each weekend this summer to about 200 kids. Glynn Episcopal Ministries funded this summer food outreach, reserving all our Backpack Buddies resources for this new school year.

Many thanks to all of you who are sponsoring the children with your generous donations and for all who work so hard on the assembly line. We look forward to seeing you on August 8!

For additional questions, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or (912) 222-9206.

Back-to-School Supplies NeededSchoolSupplies

The start of a new school year is just two weeks away! There are many families in the area that struggle to provide the needed school supplies for their children. In the past few years, Christ Church has worked with GEM (Glynn Episcopal Ministries) to make sure area students have the materials they need for a successful school year. Your generous donations in previous years have gone to help six area schools. Already, the supplies are starting to pile up this year - thank you!

If you'd like to contribute to the growing collection, please see the following list and help our area students by purchasing these school supplies and leaving them in the church office by August 5th.

Fellowship

Daughters of the King
The Daughters of the King will not be meeting in July. They will next meet on Tuesday, August 14, at 5:45 pm, in the Parish House. For more information, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected].

The O(utrageously) M(ature) G(roup)

There's a brand new group forming at Christ Church for folks who enjoy fellowship and playing games. Beginning on Friday, August 3, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, the OMGs will gather in the Parish Hall on the first Friday of every month, for lunch and games like Rummikub, Mahjongg, Bridge, Canasta or any other game that can be played by two or more people. For the first meeting, lunch will be provided by Honey Baked Ham for $10 per person.

We're planning to take the OMGs on the road, too, and are putting together two day trips per year to places like Savannah and Jacksonville, where we will travel by chartered bus, then dine out, take in show or visit museums and historic locations. This is going to be a fun group, so make sure you join us for the initial game day meeting on Friday, August 3. Let's get rolling!

BREATHE Again on August 22

The Christ Church BREATHE group will meet next on Wednesday, August 22, at 9:00 am, at Palm Coast, in St. Simons Village.  BREATHE is a group for mothers of young children through school-aged children (pre-k through grade 12) that meets monthly for coffee, fellowship, support and a short devotional. This will be a time to care for one another and take sometime out of our schedules to stop and "breathe." This is a completely laid-back group, so younger children are welcome. Contact Mtr. Ashton Williston at [email protected] for more information.

Mom's Time Out
School is starting and life is about to get more hectic, so it's about time for another night out! Moms, please join us for fellowship and a delicious dinner on Friday, August 24, at 6:00 pm, at Bonefish. Just let Mother Ashton know you'll be coming with an RSVP by Wednesday, August 22, so she can make reservations. You can reach her by email at [email protected] or by phone at 912-638-8683.

Icon Writing 3.0 at Christ Church
Fr. David Holland returns for the third consecutive year for our annual workshop. Fr. David Holland has been teaching icon writing for over 25 years and has never had anyone not finish an icon. No previous artistic ability is needed. Participants may choose one of the two icons to work on during the week.

Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Icon Writing 3.0 is Sunday, Aug 26 through Friday, Aug 31.  The worship is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily in the Parish Hall. The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit and a snack, if you would like. Fr. David furnishes all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 26, our icons will be blessed during the Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683 . For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at  [email protected]   or give her a call.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
