IN THIS ISSUE
This is the last weekend of the summer worship schedule at Christ Church. On August 19, our 9:15 am Parish Hall service will resume, joining weekend services at 5:30 pm on Saturdays at St. Ignatius Chapel, and at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am at historic Christ Church. Sunday school for children and youth will also begin on August 19, at 10:20 am.

Rector's Ramblings

I'm trying something new this week. Several folks have suggested I consider making video Rector's Ramblings, and so I have. I'm not going to give up written Ramblings, but I plan to use video to mix things up now and then. This is the first one, so understand that they will get better with time and practice. We're what you might call a low-budget shop when it comes to stuff like this. At any rate, I hope you find this a useful format.

Kreimborg Cross Presentation
Our heartfelt congratulations to Seiler Thompson, who was awarded the Kreimborg Cross and Scholarship on Sunday, August 5, at the 9:15 am worship service, at Christ Church. Seiler has served many years as a faithful acolyte and been an active part of Christ Church since he was a small child, participating in the Choristers, Bell Choir, VBS and youth groups. He recently graduated from Frederica Academy and will be attending Valdosta State University this fall. Godspeed, Seiler!

Beautifying Our Worship Spaces

The Christ Church Flower Guild members who decorate Christ Church, St. Ignatius and the Christ Church Parish Hall had the opportunity to take part in the first of two flower arranging workshops this past weekend. Taught by floral designer and parishioner, David Lowe, the classes focused on the most essential skills Flower Guild designers need to know - mechanics, requirements, and commitment.  Arrangements created included  pieces for the altar, door hangings, a candle ring to fit the Paschal Candle, a Processional Cross spray and a Font wreath. The second floral workshop, this coming Saturday, will yield more beautiful arrangements to enhance our worship spaces this weekend.  The music for the Sunday morning liturgies at 9:15 and 11:15 am will honor the Flower Guild of Christ Church. We are thankful for the artistic talent of so many parishioners who give of their time and talent to beautify our worship spaces to the Glory of God.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class is studying Adam Hamilton's new book Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Troubled Times.  Everyone is welcome. Classes are in the parish house from 10:30 until 11:15 am and will continue to meet over the summer.  For more information, contact Bob at [email protected] .

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 am in the Youth Room will be reading  Our Towns: a 100,000 Mile Journey into the Heart of America , by James and Deborah Fallows.  " A vivid, surprising portrait of the civic and economic reinvention taking place in America, town by town and generally out of view of the national media. A realistically positive and provocative view of the country between its coasts.

For the last five years, James and Deborah Fallows have been traveling across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, they have met hundreds of civic leaders, workers, immigrants, educators, environmentalists, artists, public servants, librarians, business people, city planners, students, and entrepreneurs to take the pulse and understand the prospects of places that usually draw notice only after a disaster or during a political campaign. Our Towns is the story of their journey-and an account of a country busy remaking itself."

Books will be available in the church office for $21. Please contact Father Tom at [email protected], for more information.

Cursillo at Honey Creek

Cursillo is a Spanish word which means "a short course in Christianity." Twice each year, the Diocese of Georgia holds a Cursillo at Honey Creek. Beginning on Thursday evening, October 11, 2018, you can experience a weekend of resting in God's reassuring love and peace which passes all understanding. You will hear talks from clergy and lay people in the diocese, attend services in the beautiful chapel at Honey Creek, and enjoy fellowship and meaningful conversations with other participants throughout the diocese.

If you are interested in attending the October 11-14 Cursillo at Honey Creek, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] or at 912-638-8683. If you would like to be part of the Cursillo team, please call Rita Spalding at 912-270-2725. More information about Cursillo and the registration forms for both participants and team members can be found here.

Education for Ministry Classes Beginning

Education for Ministry, a theological education course for lay ministers, will begin meeting at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Brunswick, on Wednesday, September 5. The class will meet every week at 5:30 pm and is open to all who are eighteen years old and older. Mentors for the program are Rita Spalding and Maggie Watkins.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 80,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together. Get more information about EfM here.

If you are interested in joining this study program, please contact Mtr. Ashton at  [email protected] or at 912-638-8683.

 Children and Youth

Sunday School Begins on August 19th

Sunday school classes for children and youth begin on Sunday, August 19th, starting at 10:20 am. We have classes beginning with our PreK-Kindergarten (ages 4-5) class, our First and Second Grade class, the Third-Fifth Grade class, and separate classes for Middle and High School students, too. Nursery is available for children from ages 0 to 4. Sunday school follows the public school calendar and uses a curriculum that relates to each Sunday's worship in age appropriate ways. We look forward to a year of learning and growing in God's love!

Acolyte Training
On Sunday, September 9, immediately after the 9:15 am service, there will be a training session for Acolytes. All those who are interested, from grade 1 though high school, are invited to meet in the church that morning, at 10:20 am. Please contact Mother Ashton at [email protected] for more information.

Happening #101 - A Life-Changing Weekend for Grades 10-12

Led by teens for teens, Happening is a weekend of discovery. The next Happening will be #101 at Honey Creek September 14-16, 2018, and is open to those in grades 10 - 12. Katie Grant from Good Shepherd, Augusta, is the Rector for the upcoming weekend. During a Happening weekend, participants worship, play, sing, and talk about God's place in their lives. They make new friends who share similar concerns and questions - a reassuring discovery. A teenager who acts as "rector" leads the weekend with the help of a staff consisting mostly of young people. Some staff members give challenging talks, after which there's time for discussion and activity. Together, the staff and participants share in an exploration of the impact of Christian faith in their daily lives. Happening costs $101 to attend, and financial assistance is available. To register, click here.   For more information, please contact Jody Grant at [email protected] .

Backpack Buddies Launches Eighth Year at Christ Church!

A terrific group of Backpack Buddy packers filled the Parish Hall on Wednesday morning, August 8, for the first session of food bag assembly for the 2018-2019 school year. This marks the eighth year that Christ Church has been involved in this crucial program to help keep hungry children fed on the weekends during the school year!

Christ Church members, visitors and friends have really stepped up to help children at risk for hunger in Glynn County and we are so thankful for the sponsorships that have come in so far. Presently, we have over 150 children sponsored! Each year, we feed around 200 disadvantaged children, so we are hoping for even more folks to participate. You can sponsor weekend food for a child for the entire school year for $100, or for one semester for $50. Of course, any donation will be gladly accepted - just make out a check to Christ Church Frederica, write Backpack Buddies in the memo line and drop it in the offering plate or by the church office!

For questions about the Backpack Buddy program and information about how you can involved with packing and more, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]. Thank you for making this the best Backpack Buddies season we've ever had!

Birthdays Celebrated at St. Mark's Towers

On Tuesday, July 31, the Christ Church Sunday Morning Adult Class threw a birthday party for residents at St. Mark's Towers. St. Mark's Towers holds a birthday dinner once a month for residents who have enjoyed a birthday during that month and this time, the CCF Adult Class hosted. Class members helped set up and then serve the tables as the guests arrived. Everyone was welcome - birthday honorees and residents - around 150 people attended! Ed and Lynne Turner arranged for a chicken dinner from Grandy's with fried chicken, rolls, creamed potatoes, green beans and iced tea. The class members served the residents at their tables and birthday cake was already at each place. Ladd Rector entertained with nostalgic tunes on the piano, and Mother Ashton welcomed everyone and offered a blessing. The Adult Class members had a great time preparing the plates, serving them and then cleaning up afterward. Click here to see more photos.

Daughters of the King
The Daughters of the King will next meet on Tuesday, August 14, at 5:45 pm, in the Parish House. For more information, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected].

The OMGs had their inaugural meeting on Friday, August 3 and the good times rolled! After a delicious lunch from Honeybaked Ham, the group got into some serious game-playing. Rummikub, Bridge, Scrabble, War, and many other games were taught and played!  (To see photos of the fun, click  here.)

Mark your calendar and plan to join us the first Friday of every month. Even if you don't play games, come for the fun, fellowship and good food! Invite your friends, RSVP and place your lunch order at 912-638-8683 or or  [email protected]Honey Baked Ham will be served.  Lunch choices include: Ham and Cheese, Chicken Salad, or Turkey and Cheese

The next meeting of the OMGs will be Friday, September 7, at 11:30 am, in the Parish Hall.

See you in September!!

Susanna Wesley Guild August Luncheon
On Tuesday, August 21, at 12:00 pm, the members of the Susanna Wesley Guild will be meeting for lunch and fellowship at the newly opened Demere Grill (formerly Loco's) in the Shops at Demere. This is always a fun gathering, so the group will most likely be meeting for lunch again in September, at a location to be determined. For more information, please contact Ethel Horton at [email protected] .

BREATHE Again on August 22

The Christ Church BREATHE group will meet next on Wednesday, August 22, at 9:00 am, at Palm Coast, in St. Simons Village.  BREATHE is a group for mothers of young children through school-aged children (pre-k through grade 12) that meets monthly for coffee, fellowship, support and a short devotional. This will be a time to care for one another and take sometime out of our schedules to stop and "breathe." This is a completely laid-back group, so younger children are welcome. Contact Mtr. Ashton Williston at [email protected] for more information.

Mom's Time Out
School is starting and life is about to get more hectic, so it's about time for another night out! Moms, please join us for fellowship and a delicious dinner on Friday, August 24, at 6:00 pm, at Bonefish. Just let Mother Ashton know you'll be coming with an RSVP by Wednesday, August 22, so she can make reservations. You can reach her by email at [email protected] or by phone at 912-638-8683.

Icon Writing 3.0 at Christ Church
Fr. David Holland returns for the third consecutive year for our annual workshop. Fr. David Holland has been teaching icon writing for over 25 years and has never had anyone not finish an icon. No previous artistic ability is needed. Participants may choose one of the two icons to work on during the week.

Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Icon Writing 3.0 is Sunday, Aug 26 through Friday, Aug 31.  The worship is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily in the Parish Hall. The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit and a snack, if you would like. Fr. David furnishes all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 26, our icons will be blessed during the Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683 . For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at  [email protected]   or give her a call.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
