Rector's Ramblings

Art is incredibly powerful, or it can be, at its best. Art of all kinds transports us to places and feelings beyond whatever the medium itself may be. This past summer we had the chance to spend a couple of days in Paris and took the girls to the Louvre. They were able to see master works like the Mona Lisa, Venus di Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. They saw the works of masters known and others most of us can't name. They took in ancient Egyptian art, which can seem almost alien to us in our modern culture. They also noticed the frequency with which religious themes and biblical stories are represented in the works on display.

The Church was, for a long time, the chief source of visual artistic support. Paintings and sculptures were commissioned to capture moments in biblical teachings and portray heroes of the faith. Many adorned worship spaces, while others were used for personal devotion in homes. It was the inspiration and patronage of the Church that kept some artists going and encouraged others. There has long been a relationship between artists and churches, although that has largely waned, apart from musical arts, which are still foundational to modern church communities.

Help Welcome Visitors to Christ Church

Have you ever visited a historic site or beautiful landmark and found it closed? It's supposed to be open but on the day you come it's closed! Sadly, visitors to Christ Church are traveling long distances to experience our beautiful history only to find our doors closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays because we don't have volunteers to welcome them. We need friendly parishioners on a short-term basis Tuesdays or Wednesdays 2:00 to 5:00 pm,  to greet visitors until we are able to recruit and train docents. Call Sharon in the church office, 912-638-8683, if you would like to volunteer short-term or need more information.

Frederick Cousins Oyster Roast

The turn-out was tremendous for the Frederick Cousins Oyster Roast last Friday, February 9th. The River Rats roasted bushel after bushel of delicious Texas oysters for the hungry crowd, who also enjoyed pots of delicious Brunswick stew cooked up by the members of the Frederick Cousins Guild. Many thanks to all who attended this important fundraiser and to all the guild members and their families who worked so hard to make the evening happen. Proceeds from the Oyster Roast  will go to the Compass Rose Society, which supports the programs and ministries of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and to various local charities. To see more pictures from the Oyster Roast, click here.

Pancakes at the Pier

As the sounds of spritely jazz reverberated through the St. Simons Village and the aroma of sizzling pancakes and sausages filled the air, the members and friends of Christ Church gathered at the Casino for a lively salute to Shrove Tuesday, New Orleans-style! Neither fog nor drizzle dampened the spirits of all who paraded through Neptune Park, ate delicious pancakes and even ran relay races. Many thanks to all who devoted their time and talents to make this Shrove Tuesday a night to remember! (More photos to come next week!)
Susanna Wesley Guild Meeting

The Susanna Wesley Guild will meet Tuesday, February 20 at 10:30 am in the parish hall. Their speaker is longtime Glynn County resident Hal Hart, owner of the island's Ace Hardware store. He will share his memories of life on St. Simons through the years. Contact: Frankie Ansley at 912-638-8974.

Cross Collection on Display at Epworth
The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth-by-the-Sea Conference and Retreat Center, is happy to announce a special exhibition in the Atrium of the Museum which will be on display from Ash Wednesday  to Easter Sunday , the whole season of Lent.

The exhibition is the cross collection of one of our own, the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown. The crosses represent a collection gathered over a 40-year ministerial career and come from all over the world. They are made of a huge variety of materials and reflect many different interpretations of one of our most sacred symbols.  Though more than 90% of the crosses have been gifts, no cross has ever been repeated and never has the entire collection been on display at one time.  Dr. Brown is particularly pleased to offer this exhibition for the enjoyment of the members of Christ Church, Frederica.  May the cross, as a symbol, remind us of sacrifice and commitment and, especially, of the power of love.

Mardi Gras Party for SOAR at Christ Church

by John La Boone
"Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you..." - Romans 15:7a

On February 12, Christ Church hosted a Mardi Gras party for the club members of SOAR (Social Opportunities and Active Recreation). SOAR is a local v501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded in 2015 that is run by volunteers to partner with businesses, churches and civic clubs to provide recreational and socialization opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. The event featured festive decorations, hats, beads, masks and fun foods. About 35 people plus caregivers participated. Christ Church Music Director Kathleen Turner gave the group a demonstration of how handbells are used to make music. The club members accompanied Kathleen on the hymn "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee." The celebration ended with a rousing Mardi Gras Parade around the parish hall, singing "When the Saints Go Marching In."

Adults with developmental disabilities historically have not had a lot of access to opportunities to socialize and engage in fun activities, something every human being needs. With the help of SOAR, local clients now have a lot more possibilities to get those needs met. They have been on a fishing expedition, gone bowling, had pizza parties and enjoyed put-put golf outings. Christina's Dance World sponsors regular dance sessions for them. Altama Presbyterian Church sponsors craft-making sessions and other opportunities on a weekly basis. Leaders of SOAR say that all this is making a huge difference in the lives of the club members.

For more information on SOAR call (912) 434-3484 or email info@soargoldenisles.org .  To view a short video of the Mardi Gras party, click on this link.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
