Rector's Ramblings

Today I get to share an important update on our hoped-for Frederica Road project! At yesterday's County Commission work session, the Commissioners voted to officially apply for funding from the Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) to help fund the relocation of Frederica Road. The vote was 6-1, although the no-vote also spoke in favor of the project and potential future funding. As it is, the resolution passed, and included $50,000 of funding from Glynn County in addition to the in-kind costs associated with Glynn County staff time. This is an important step as we pursue shifting Frederica Road and creating safe and ample parking on the same side of Frederica Road as the Church. We expect to know the outcome of the FLAP application early in the fall at the latest.

If the FLAP funding is not awarded, the project will be reevaluated. As of right now, this is a $1.3 million dollar project. Ft. Frederica is putting up $37,500 towards improvements on their property; Park Service dollars for projects like this are rare, which indicates the value of this project. Glynn County is putting up $50,000, largely to offset improvements to the intersection at Stevens Road. Christ Church has pledged $500,000 to make up the rest of the "local match" that is required to give the project the highest chance of receiving matching funds from FLAP.  Christ Church's funding was unanimously approved at the January meeting of the Vestry. While we have the funds available today in our Endowment, we anticipate raising these funds, and additional funds to create a parking area, through a future capital campaign.

Worship

Choral Evensong
On Sunday, March 4, a Choral Evensong will take place at 5:00 pm, at Christ Church. Evensong is Evening Prayer set to music. It is a time to listen, pray, meditate and sing. Please join us for this quiet, reflective liturgy as we enter the season of Lent. The Christ Church Choir and guest instrumentalists will offer special music.

Daily Lenten Prayers
Father Tom will be offering daily text prayers in Lent, through Easter week. Those who would like to receive a daily text message prayer should email their names and cell phone numbers to him at tom@ccfssi.org.

Christ Church Lenten and Easter Brochure
There are a myriad of classes, studies, worship opportunities and activities available at Christ Church during the Lenten Season. You will find details about these offerings, as well as the worship schedule for Holy Week and Easter in the  comprehensive Lenten and Easter guide  here. This Lenten and Easter brochure is also available on the Christ Church website homepage, here.

Easter Lilies

The Daughters of the King will begin meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:45 pm, in the Parish House. The first meeting will be on March 6, 2018. Please contact Mtr. Ashton at ashton@ccfssi.org for more information.

Formation

Dr. Bob Brown's  adult Sunday morning class continues  its discussion of study of the New Testament using The Great Courses lecture series. Everyone is welcome! Classes take place in the Parish House each Sunday from 10:30 until 11:15 am. For more information, contact Bob at rwb385@gmail.com.

Final Chapters

Our clergy will lead Final Chapters, a five week course centered on end of life preparation. The topic for the first meeting on February 22nd, at 2:00 pm, will be, "Dying with Dignity", led by Dr. John Shaner, Chief Medical Officer of Hospice of the Golden Isles. The following week, Mtr. Becky will lead a discussion on aging. Please contact Mtr. Becky at becky@ccfssi.org, if you are interested in joining this group.

The Art of Lent

A weekly art talk and reflection featuring guest artists will take place throughout Lent. Father Tom will host. Come to the parish hall each Wednesday at 1:00 pm. A simple lunch will be served. The next session is February 28th when the CCF Icon Writing Group will display and discuss the sacred icons they've created. If you are willing to share some sacred art for display or if you are an artist who has created works of your own, please contact Fr. Tom at tom@ccfssi.org or 912-638-2439

Lenten Labyrinth Walk
Thursday, February 22: Join us at 6:00 pm to walk the Labyrinth in the Parish Hall, reflecting on the religious art of Randy Siegel. The Rev. Jann Briscoe will lead the meditation and walk.

Women's Study Group
On Tuesday, March 1st, at 11:30 am, the Women's Study Group will begin their study of 24/6 written by Matthew Sleeth. The book is centered on "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy." In today's 24/7 lifestyle, remembering to rest can be difficult. During this season of Lent we will focus on centering our lives on Christ and taking our Sabbath intentionally. Contact Mtr. Ashton at ashton@ccfssi.org if you are interested in joining the group.

EC101
Starting on Wednesday, March 7th, at 5:30 pm, Episcopal Church 101 is a six-week study for anyone wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church, either in preparation for being confirmed, received or reaffirmed (wonder what the difference is among those?) or simply to answer those "why do we" questions. If you are interested in joining this group or would like to know more, please contact Mtr. Becky at becky@ccfssi.org or call the church office at 912-638-8683.

A Question of Identity Retreat

On Saturday, March 10, from 8:30 am to to 4:00 pm, author Randy Siegel will discuss how answering the question, "Who am I?" brings power, purpose and peace into our lives. Randy writes, "Our spiritual and psychological health rests in the question of identity. Regardless of whether we call it ego, personality, or persona, we need a strong one if we are going to navigate the world and enjoy a successful life. At the same time, if this is the only way we see ourselves, we will never be truly fulfilled. There's something deep within that longs to return to our essence, or divine self, and be in union, reunion, and communion with the Divine." The cost of the workshop is $25 and includes materials and a light lunch. Contact Mtr. Becky at becky@ccfssi.org to sign up for this event.

ECW Scholarship
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.

"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.

Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here  and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

Pancakes at the Pier - New Photos!

As the sounds of spritely jazz reverberated through the St. Simons Village and the aroma of sizzling pancakes and sausages filled the air, the members and friends of Christ Church gathered at the Casino for a lively salute to Shrove Tuesday, New Orleans-style! Neither fog nor drizzle dampened the spirits of all who paraded through Neptune Park, ate delicious pancakes and even ran relay races. Many thanks to all who devoted their time and talents to make this Shrove Tuesday a night to remember! See more the pictures of the fun here!

Cross Collection on Display at Epworth
The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth-by-the-Sea Conference and Retreat Center, is happy to announce a special exhibition in the Atrium of the Museum which will be on display from Ash Wednesday  to Easter Sunday , the whole season of Lent.

The exhibition is the cross collection of one of our own, the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown. The crosses represent a collection gathered over a 40-year ministerial career and come from all over the world. They are made of a huge variety of materials and reflect many different interpretations of one of our most sacred symbols.  Though more than 90% of the crosses have been gifts, no cross has ever been repeated and never has the entire collection been on display at one time.  Dr. Brown is particularly pleased to offer this exhibition for the enjoyment of the members of Christ Church, Frederica.  May the cross, as a symbol, remind us of sacrifice and commitment and, especially, of the power of love.

Up with People!
Up with People is coming to Glynn County, March 26 to April 2, 2018. Up with People was founded on the principle of using music as a means to communicate with and inspire people. In each city we visit, Up with People cast members perform a vibrant and inspiring musical stage show that brings the community together to enjoy a night of entertainment while sparking people to take action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world. It's fun for the whole family and an experience you'll never forget!

The Advance Team is looking for host families for the cast members. Host families provide a place to sleep, limited transportation and some meals. While the cast is in town they will be getting involved volunteering in the local community. You can learn more about the 100 member cast from 20 different countries  here. If you have any questions, please contact Ashton at  ashton@ccfssi.org about her experience while traveling with Up with People.

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
