Rector's Ramblings

Two weeks ago I preached a sermon on Jesus' expulsion into the wilderness after his baptism. As I've said before, we preachers tend to preach to ourselves along the way. What you also may not know is that sometimes the sermon sticks with us after we preach it, the way it can stick with parishioners who hear it. Sometimes people have stopped me weeks after a sermon to tell me that they are still "chewing on it". Well, we sometimes do the same thing. For me, the one that is sticking with me is the sermon on the wilderness. And it comes from an unexpected place, in one sense.
As sometimes happens with preaching, we preachers edit on the fly. We revise and adjust, adding or taking away, depending on how the Spirit moves. During the third iteration of that sermon, so the one at 9:15, I heard words escape my mouth that weren't in my original text: "We can stay out of the woods, but we can't stay out of the wilderness." It fit perfectly with what I had been saying, yet it wasn't a concise thought until it popped out. I have continued to think on it ever since, recognizing the work of the Spirit in it.

Choral Evensong
On Sunday, March 4, a Choral Evensong will take place at 5:00 pm, at Christ Church. Evensong is Evening Prayer set to music. It is a time to listen, pray, meditate and sing. Please join us for this quiet, reflective liturgy as we enter the season of Lent. The Christ Church Choir will offer special music.

Christ Church Lenten and Easter Brochure
There are a myriad of classes, studies, worship opportunities and activities available at Christ Church during the Lenten Season. You will find details about these offerings, as well as the worship schedule for Holy Week and Easter in the  comprehensive Lenten and Easter guide  here. This Lenten and Easter brochure is also available on the Christ Church website homepage, here.
Taking Prayer a Bit Higher
By John La Boone
"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."                                             - Romans 12:1
We are now in the Season of Lent, a time when many Christians take on some special study, abstinence or devotional practice to become penitent and to exercise greater spiritual self-discipline that will help them live according to God's laws. There is a wide spectrum of Lenten practice. Some folks give up things they would otherwise enjoy fairly regularly. Giving up chocolate seems to be very popular. Other kinds of fasting are used to join in the spirit of Jesus spending 40 days in the desert during which he was tempted by Satan.
Some Christians prefer to take on something extra rather than to give something up. Group or individual study programs, regular reading of the Bible, saying the Daily Office, or extra time spent in prayer are ways that are often used as Lenten disciplines. The common denominator in all this is turning one's thoughts away from the routine comforts, pleasures and illusions of this world to concentrate instead on our relationship with God so we can more fully discover his will for us.

Easter Lilies
Remember a loved one at Easter when you order a lily to decorate the altar on Easter morning. Send the name(s) and a check for $30 per lily to Ethel Horton, 402 Palm Court, SSI, 31522. Make checks payable to "Christ Church Altar Guild." Please make your order by March 28.

Daughters of the King
The Daughters of the King will begin meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:45 pm, in the Parish House. The first meeting will be on March 6, 2018. Please contact Mtr. Ashton at for more information.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
Dr. Bob Brown's  adult Sunday morning class continues  its discussion of study of the New Testament using The Great Courses lecture series. Everyone is welcome! Classes take place in the Parish House each Sunday from 10:30 until 11:15 am. For more information, contact Bob at

Final Chapters

Our clergy is leading Final Chapters, a five week course centered on end of life preparation. On March 1st, at 2:00 pm, Mtr. Becky will lead a discussion on aging. "Beginning in middle age, we must study how to get old because the later years require wisdom even more than do the decades that have preceded them." - Dr. Milton Crum, a 87 year old former professor at Virginia Theological Seminary. Please contact Mtr. Becky at, if you are interested in joining this group.

The Art of Lent

A weekly art talk and reflection featuring guest artists will take place throughout Lent. Father Tom will host. Come to the parish hall each Wednesday at 1:00 pm. A simple lunch will be served. The next session is March 7th, when sacred artwork from the collections of our parishioners will be the focus. If you are willing to share some sacred art for display or if you are an artist who has created works of your own, please contact Fr. Tom at or 912-638-2439.

Women's Study Group
On Tuesday, March 1st, at 11:30 am, the Women's Study Group will begin their study of 24/6 written by Matthew Sleeth. The book is centered on "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy." In today's 24/7 lifestyle, remembering to rest can be difficult. During this season of Lent we will focus on centering our lives on Christ and taking our Sabbath intentionally. Contact Mtr. Ashton at if you are interested in joining the group.

Starting on Wednesday, March 7th, at 5:30 pm, Episcopal Church 101 is a six-week study for anyone wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church, either in preparation for being confirmed, received or reaffirmed (wonder what the difference is among those?) or simply to answer those "why do we" questions. If you are interested in joining this group or would like to know more, please contact Mtr. Becky at or call the church office at 912-638-8683.

A Question of Identity RetreatWhoAmIRetreat

On Saturday, March 10, from 8:30 am to to 4:00 pm, author Randy Siegel will discuss how answering the question, "Who am I?" brings power, purpose and peace into our lives. Randy writes, "Our spiritual and psychological health rests in the question of identity. Regardless of whether we call it ego, personality, or persona, we need a strong one if we are going to navigate the world and enjoy a successful life. At the same time, if this is the only way we see ourselves, we will never be truly fulfilled. There's something deep within that longs to return to our essence, or divine self, and be in union, reunion, and communion with the Divine."

Using poetry, prayer, music, dialog, and journaling, participants will explore where they are in their lives and examine a number of career, life, and spiritual tools to assist in the journey, including:
· Proven four-step process to package, present, and promote their best selves for success.
· Means for tuning into their "internal GPS" to help more intentionally navigate their lives.
· Three-tiered psychological spiritual system to help claim their Divine DNA and become the person they were born to be.

The cost of the workshop is $25 and includes materials and a light lunch. Please sign up for this event by contacting Mtr. Becky at by March 7th.

ECW Scholarship
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.
"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.
Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here  and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church!

Have you ever visited a historic site or beautiful landmark and found it closed? It's supposed to be open but on the day you come it's closed! Sadly, visitors to Christ Church are traveling long distances to experience our beautiful history only to find our doors closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, because we don't have volunteers to welcome them. We need friendly parishioners on a short-term basis Tuesdays or Wednesdays,  to greet visitors until we are able to recruit and train docents. Call Sharon in the church office, at 912-638-8683, if you would like to volunteer short-term or need more information. If you are interested in joining our docent team, we are currently seeking volunteers to serve once a month in afternoon shifts from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. For more information please contact Fred Collins at

Faithworks Birdies and Bass Charity Tournament

The $400 entry fee for each team includes golf, lunch and prizes. Fishing starts at 10:00 am followed by a shotgun start for the golf at 12:00 pm. Contact Fr. Tom at if you're interested in joining a Christ Church team.

Cross Collection on Display at Epworth
The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth-by-the-Sea Conference and Retreat Center, is happy to announce a special exhibition in the Atrium of the Museum which will be on display from Ash Wednesday  to Easter Sunday , the whole season of Lent.

The exhibition is the cross collection of one of our own, the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown. The crosses represent a collection gathered over a 40-year ministerial career and come from all over the world. They are made of a huge variety of materials and reflect many different interpretations of one of our most sacred symbols.  Though more than 90% of the crosses have been gifts, no cross has ever been repeated and never has the entire collection been on display at one time.  Dr. Brown is particularly pleased to offer this exhibition for the enjoyment of the members of Christ Church, Frederica.  May the cross, as a symbol, remind us of sacrifice and commitment and, especially, of the power of love.

Up with People!
Up with People is coming to Glynn County, March 26 to April 2, 2018. Up with People was founded on the principle of using music as a means to communicate with and inspire people. In each city we visit, Up with People cast members perform a vibrant and inspiring musical stage show that brings the community together to enjoy a night of entertainment while sparking people to take action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world. It's fun for the whole family and an experience you'll never forget!

The Advance Team is looking for host families for the cast members. Host families provide a place to sleep, limited transportation and some meals. While the cast is in town they will be getting involved volunteering in the local community. You can learn more about the 100 member cast from 20 different countries  here. If you have any questions, please contact Ashton at about her experience while traveling with Up with People.

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return.
