SAHBA Receives Grant for Construction Career Days from NAHB

We are thrilled to share the news that SAHBA and the Southern Arizona Construction Career Days Building Area have been awarded a grant of $3,000 under the Career Connections V program. This remarkable achievement is made possible by the National Housing Endowment (NHE), which has set an ambitious target of introducing 100,000 students to career opportunities in the residential skilled trades by 2024.

The primary objective of this funding is to support various activities aimed at introducing students to the vast array of rewarding careers within the residential skilled trades industry. With this grant, SAHBA and Southern Arizona Construction Career Days Building Area will be able to provide even more invaluable opportunities for students to explore and engage during the 2024 Southern Arizona Construction Career Days (SACCD).

To learn how you can be a part of this year's event, visit the SACCD website or call Yvette at 520-918-2368.

ADVOCACY

Arizona State Land Department Proposed Rulemaking

Following stakeholder meetings, SAHBA submitted final comments on the Department’s proposed rulemaking. The comments focused on clarification around the changes and working to ensure the new rule does not present additional obstacles for members. Click here to read SAHBA's letter.

Executive Leadership Meeting with County Administrator Jan Lesher

On January 30, SAHBA met with Pima County Administrator Jan Lesher and Deputy Administrator Carmine DeBonis Jr. to discuss initiatives and priorities for both organizations. The discussion encompassed various key areas, including updates on the Affordable Housing Commission's prosperity, the pending adoption of the 2024 International Codes, and the Comprehensive Plan Update. The County will be working with SAHBA and its members as these issues move forward in the future. If you have any questions, please contact Brendan Lyons at brendan@sahba.org.

Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT)

On Tuesday, February 6, Tucson's Mayor and Council voted to call a special election on August 6, 2024, for voting on a charter amendment to establish a transaction privilege tax. The revenue would fund community investments to promote quality of life for our residents and businesses. The rate of the tax had not been established. SAHBA will be monitoring the issues and analyzing potential impacts on our members. If you have any questions, please contact David at david@sahba.org.

Gray Water Allowance Policy

At the last Technical Committee Meeting, Clayton Trvillyan, Building Official with Tucson's Planning and Development Services, presented a new policy that would allow for the use of a 3-way diverter valve in residential gray water applications. The new policy will not be mandatory but will serve as an option to meet the Residential Gray Water Ordinance for new one and two-family dwellings. The valve can be used for both new dwellings and as an acceptable means to retrofit gray water piping in existing buildings.

We appreciate the opportunity to evaluate the proposal and are supportive of the optional use of the 3-way diverter valve.

Mayor and Council Approve Appointment of Ann Chanecka as Director of Housing and Community Development

On February 6, Tucson's Mayor and Council appointed Ann Chanecka as the director of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Chanecka who has served as HCD's interim director since June 2023, brings over 20 years of community development and urban planning experience to the role. Click here to read the news release.

SAHBA Tech Meetings

Sign up for our monthly Tech Committee Meetings, where we review city, county and state ordinances, regulations, and policies relative to land-use planning, zoning, building codes and development. This is a great opportunity to be actively involved in governmental communications with appointed staff and elected officials.

NAHB's 2023 Advocacy Victories

In a year of hyper-partisan gridlock that produced less than two dozen bills enacted into law (the fewest number in decades), NAHB was able to establish a formidable presence on Capitol Hill and move the ball forward on a number of high-priority legislative objectives. Click here to read all the advocacy victories NAHB delivered to its members in 2023.
