Rector's Ramblings

This year I am eligible for sabbatical leave, although I won't be taking it yet. The Church is one of the last places that still honors the sabbatical tradition, but there are some organizations bringing the practice back.  Sabbaticals are related to sabbath, the Fourth Commandment, although sabbatical is not a part of the commandment itself. It is, though, the concept of rest on a seven-unit cycle that ties them together. Sabbath is stopping work every seventh day, while sabbatical is stopping work every seventh year.

In the Diocese of Georgia, per the standard Letter of Agreement between parishes and clergy, clergy are eligible for sabbatical leave of two weeks per year of service in the congregation, after three years, accumulating no more than 12 weeks, total. This is fairly standard throughout the church. Most clergy take leave all at once after six years, which is my intent. Except I am going to wait until after my seventh year, as a result of the large projects we anticipate being involved in this year.

"The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work 'reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams'."

Happening #101
Friday, February 1, at 7:00 pm, to Sunday, February 3, 2019, at 5:00 pm, at Honey Creek.

Happening is a Christian experience presented by teenagers for teenagers. During a Happening weekend, participants worship, play, sing, and talk about God's place in their lives. They make new friends who share similar concerns and questions, which can be a reassuring discovery. A teenager who acts as "rector" leads the weekend with the help of a staff consisting mostly of young people. This year's rector is Ashley Walker. Together, the staff and participants share in an exploration of the impact of Christian faith in their daily lives. Happeners who attend a weekend for their first time are called "Candidates." To be a Candidate, one must: Have completed the 9th grade and have not begun college.  Cost: $110. Click HERE to register.  If you would like to apply for a scholarship to attend Happening #101, please  contact Jody Grant with your request at  [email protected] . For more information about Happening #101, contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected].

Outreach

From Our Friends at St. Athanasius
Dear Caring Friends,

As always, we would like to say a big "Thank you" for your support of the "Feed My Sheep" Food Bank Ministry this year. We have "Come This Far by Faith" for almost 14 years because of caring friends like you.

With your generous and unselfish support this year, we were able to provide groceries to over 2000 families. We distributed books, Bibles, and other personal care needs such as heaters, fans and bicycles to approximately 575 individuals. Prayer and individual counseling was also provided by Rev. Magoola and Mrs. Deborah Craig when requested.

This Outreach Ministry could not have been sustained all these years without the fervent support of 15 energetic and dedicated volunteers. These volunteers come not only from St. "A", but also from Christ Church, Frederica, St. Mark's, Holy Nativity, St. Ignatius and several other churches in our community.

Again, we say thank you and may Almighty God continue to bless each of you abundantly with daily reminders of His love.

In His name,

The Rev. Dr. Robert J. Magoola
Priest in Charge

Velma Crosby
Food Bank Chairperson
