Robert Gledhill, M.D.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Robert (Bob) Gledhill, a deeply valued member of the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center family.

His obituary described a life defined by service, curiosity, compassion, and devotion to family—words we wholeheartedly affirm. We would also add that Dr. Gledhill was a devoted member of our Board of Directors for more than 30 years, leaving an indelible mark on our mission and community.

Dr. Gledhill earned his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and completed early training at the Montreal General Hospital, followed by advanced orthopedic training at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, England—then one of the world’s leading orthopedic centers. Upon returning to Montreal, he built an extraordinary career caring for children with complex musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he served as Director of Orthopedic Surgery, Chief of Staff, and Attending Surgeon. He was also a long-standing Associate Professor of Surgery at McGill University.

A pioneer in multidisciplinary care, Dr. Gledhill co-founded the Spina Bifida Clinic at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and established its first Muscular Dystrophy Clinic in 1976—just two of many lasting contributions in a remarkable career.

Later, Dr. Gledhill and his wife of 61 years, Susan (Sue) Jackson Gledhill, moved to San Antonio. After learning about Easterseals in the early 1990s, he simply stopped by the Center, introduced himself, and offered to volunteer. We were grateful—and fortunate—to say yes.

He remained deeply involved in patient care through his medical practice and work at local hospitals, including Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, Methodist Children’s Hospital, and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital. Known for his colorful ties and, more importantly, his unhurried presence, Dr. Gledhill listened deeply and never moved on until every question had been answered.

Even in lighter moments, his compassion shone through—such as when, serving as the first Board guest judge for our decorated doors, he insisted that runners-up be recognized because of the evident effort and heart involved. That tradition continues today.

To Sue, his daughters Erica and Katherine, and all who loved him: Dr. Gledhill will always hold a special place in our hearts. While we are still determining how best to honor his legacy within our Center, please know that his life’s work, kindness, and commitment will not be forgotten. We have lost a treasured member of our Easterseals family. May he rest in peace.
