Rector's Ramblings

This week I am sharing the sermon from this past Sunday.  It was a sermon about legacy that apparently touched many of you. Since it served as my "state of the parish" sermon, geared towards the heart of the parish as we gathered for our Annual Meeting, I'll share it here for those who couldn't be with us.

Some of you have noticed that I have been experimenting with preaching with no notes. That means that although I wrote the sermon out in its entirety beforehand, what was actually preached doesn't match the manuscript exactly. I am including both the original manuscript and I am including a link to the audio of the sermon, which would be the preferred way to review the sermon. You can do that here.

At our Annual Meeting on January 28, Fr. Tom provided a brief update on Master Plan progress. A Building Committee is being formed under the chairmanship of Rip Graham, recently elected to the Vestry. The Building Committee will identify an architectural firm to take the concepts from the Master Plan and create specific plans so that timing and funding can be assessed. The Building Committee will have its first meeting in February. There will also be a Capital Campaign Committee forming to assess the feasibility of the fundraising necessary to take action on the Master Plan's suggestions. This Committee has not yet been formed.

Looking to the Heavens Above

Priest Associate, Fr. David Somerville, may have been reading the Eighth Psalm more frequently than for his own good. He has developed an interest in all the sky beholds to the naked eye. So he bought a pair of binoculars. The result: An interest in finding a fellowship of folks who would like to explore the cosmos once or twice per month with something more substantial than a pair of binocs. He is currently in conversation with the natural science department at the Costal Community College for a leader, whose first task would be to help Fr. David choose an affordable, but good quality telescope. The leader's second task would be to discuss with our group the remarkable beauty and diversity of planets in our solar system, the constellations of our sky through which the planets wander, and the structure of the Milky Way Galaxy. If you are interested in this kind of back yard astronomy, which provides wonderful quality time, for mothers and sons, fathers and daughters,  send an email note to Fr. David at  summerdave@aol.com. We would probably do well to have at least between six and twelve individuals committed and involved.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
