Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class is studying Adam Hamilton's new book Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Troubled Times.  Everyone is welcome. Classes are in the parish house from 10:30 until 11:15 am and will continue to meet over the summer.  For more information, contact Bob at [email protected] .

Men's Study Group
The Wednesday morning Men's Study Group is studying A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, by Tom Gjelten. Books are available in the church office for $13. For  more information, please contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] .

Christ Church Launches Scholarship Program

The newly established Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women has awarded its first scholarship to Maggie Holt to support her academic studies at the University of Georgia where she will start her sophomore year in the fall. This initiative of the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women and the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation provides a $2,500 scholarship to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.

"We could not be more pleased to have Maggie Holt selected as our first recipient. Few young women have demonstrated a greater commitment to their church and broader community while maintaining an impeccable academic record than has Maggie," stated Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women. "Maggie embodies precisely what we were hoping to accomplish through this effort.

When asked why her life at Christ Church was important, Maggie stated, "Perhaps the most impactful lesson I have taken away from my time in the Episcopal Church is how to serve and love one another. "The Servant Song" articulates this sentiment. The beautiful lyrics say:
'Brother, sister let me serve you.
Let me be as Christ to you.
Pray that I might have the grace,
To let you be my servant, too.'"

The Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women was established and funded by many Christ Church women who, over the last fifteen years, have donated to this effort to establish a scholarship program for their young ladies. The fruit of these gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship, the Episcopal Church Women honor those who came before and saw this as just a dream.......but now it is a reality.

Said Paul White, President & CEO of the Foundation, "This effort is a great example of how the Coastal Georgia Foundation can work with other organizations and individuals in our community to accomplish meaningful, impactful and, often, complicated objectives. I am so proud that we could be a part of the team that made this scholarship a reality, not just for this year, but in perpetuity."

About the Foundation

The Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation (CCGF) was incorporated in 2005, as a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people of Glynn, McIntosh and Camden counties. The Foundation now has assets exceeding $20 million and hosts some 70 distinct funds. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $12.5 million in grants to community organizations in the three county region and beyond.

Outreach

Our Backpack Buddies Need Sponsors!BackpackBuddies
During the school year, Christ Church delivers bags of weekend food to children on free and reduced lunches in several local elementary schools and to homeless teenagers. This outreach is called Backpack Buddies. Hunger is a persistent problem in Glynn County and affects 61%, or more than 8,000 school age children. Though students have access to two meals per day at school during the week, on the weekends, nutritious food can be scarce and even non-existent. Through the Backpack Buddies program, Christ Church provides food bags to 200 children each week during the school year. You can sponsor a child for the entire school year for $100, or for one semester for $50. Read a more detailed report about the Backpack Buddies here. Get the statistics for children who are at risk for hunger in Glynn County here. For additional questions, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or (912) 222-9206.

Back-to-School Supplies NeededSchoolSupplies
The start of a new school year is just a few weeks away! There are many families in the area that struggle to provide the needed school supplies for their children. Please see the following list and consider helping our area students by donating these school supplies and leaving them in the church office by August 5th.

Fellowship

Daughters of the King
The Daughters of the King will not be meeting in July. They will next meet on Tuesday, August 14, at 5:45 pm, in the Parish House. For more information, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected].

Moms' Night Out
Hey moms! You're invited to join us on Friday, July 27, at 6:00 pm, for dinner at Gnat's Landing, in Redfern Village. We can catch up on what everybody's doing this summer, while we relax with a great meal. Please let Mother Ashton know you'll be coming with an RSVP by Wednesday, July 25. You can reach her by email at [email protected], or by phone at 912-638-8683.

The O(utrageously) M(ature) G(roup)

There's a brand new group forming at Christ Church for folks who enjoy fellowship and playing games. Beginning on Friday, August 3, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, the OMGs will gather in the Parish Hall on the first Friday of every month, for lunch and games like Rummikub, Mahjongg, Bridge, Canasta or any other game that can be played by two or more people. For the first meeting, lunch will be provided by Honey Baked Ham for $10 per person. To reserve your meal, please contact Mother Ashton by July 27, at  [email protected] or call her at 912-638-8683.

We're planning to take the OMGs on the road, too, and are putting together two day trips to per year to places like Savannah and Jacksonville, where we will travel by chartered bus, then dine out, take in show or visit museums and historic locations. This is going to be a fun group, so make sure you join us for the initial game day meeting on Friday, August 3. Let's get rolling!

BREATHE

The Christ Church BREATHE group is taking a break in July and will resume in August. BREATHE is a group for mothers of young children through school-aged children (pre-k through grade 12) that meets monthly for coffee, fellowship, support and a short devotional. This will be a time to care for one another and take sometime out of our schedules to stop and "breathe." This is a completely laid-back group, so younger children are welcome. Contact Mtr. Ashton Williston at [email protected] for more information.

Icon Writing 3.0 at Christ Church
Fr. David Holland returns for the third consecutive year for our annual workshop. Fr. David Holland has been teaching icon writing for over 25 years and has never had anyone not finish an icon. No previous artistic ability is needed. Participants may choose one of the two icons to work on during the week.

Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Icon Writing 3.0 is Sunday, Aug 26 through Friday, Aug 31.  The worship is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily in the Parish Hall. The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit and a snack, if you would like. Fr. David furnishes all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 26, our icons will be blessed during the Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683 . For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at  [email protected]   or give her a call.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
