Musical Notes from Kathleen Turner |
Greetings from Anglican Musician's heaven!
Te and I are in Boston, MA this week. I'm attending the Association of Anglican Musicians annual conference. Choral Eucharist, Morning Prayer, Choral Evensong, sessions on Chorister Training, Choral Music Reading sessions, organ recitals, and fellowship with former classmates and colleagues is benefiting my ministry at Christ Church, and it's refreshing my spirit. You'll be hearing and reading more about this valuable professional development opportunity in the coming season. Thank you George Ingram, Assistant Organist and Choirmaster for holding down the bench while I'm away.
We're not the only musicians traveling. Here is a sampling of some choir members' adventures:
David Lowe enjoyed a wonderful family trip to Italy where his brother, Sherman, lives. Even though he returned a bit travel weary the memories will be cherished. David is taking additional time off this summer. His work in the choir and with the flower guild is much appreciated and I look forward to his return to the bass section.
The Abbates are at their cottage on the CT shore. Summer plans include visits from friends and family, lots of summer theatre and music, and hosting a big Christmas in July with all of Barbara's family.
From Susan Garrett: The stunning Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine was host to the St. Augustine Music Festival the last two weeks in June. Al and I attended two of the concerts and heard Mozart, Mahler, Beethoven and more from a pianist, strings, horn and woodwinds playing in chamber music ensemble format. What a joy to hear fine classical music in such beautiful surroundings. If you have never been, and are a music lover, we highly recommend the Festival. For us it was an experience to remember!
Brooke Sumerford enjoys returning to her childhood summer camp each year. She's thrilled this is becoming a family tradition. Anne Graham looks forward to attending a class reunion. Treble Jack Taylor is venturing to a couple overnight camps which leaves quite a hole for younger brother Sam.
Safe and fun summer blessings.
Miss Kathleen

Women's Book Study - NO CLASS JULY 5 |
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They are currently reading,
Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor. The book is
"...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -

Icon Writing Workshop - August 26-30 |
The fourth annual icon writing workshop will be held August 26-30
in the Christ Church parish hall. The instructor this year is Kara Nelson. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon, a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. The group will work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, but you may work more or less as your eyes, body and soul are so inclined. Each day will begin with a brief worship and Eucharist filled with instruction about icons. The cost is $375. No previous experience is needed and all materials will be furnished. Just bring a lunch and a willingness to learn. Contact: Mtr. Becky at
becky@ccfssi.org

If you would like to help our hungry families in Glynn County this month, please bring canned and boxed food donations for the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry to St. Ignatius and the Christ Church Parish Hall this coming weekend. Many hands make light the work...

Celebrating Our Friends at Christ Church |
Long-time Christ Church parishioner, avid arts supporter and local philanthropist, Millie Wilcox, will be feted on Friday, July 5, at 6:00 pm, when the gallery and lobby of the Ritz Theatre, in Brunswick, Georgia, will be officially named in her honor. Millie has been a fixture on the arts scene in Glynn County for decades, following in the footsteps of her artist mother, Mildred Huie.
