Rector's Ramblings

Today marks the end of our Holy Land tour. About half our number is continuing on for a three-day extension to visit Petra, in Jordan. In some ways, this has been a long trip, and in other ways, it has passed in the blink of an eye. It feels like our first day in Jerusalem, visiting the Western Wall, was a lifetime ago. It also feels, as we leave Israel, that we just got here. It is a beautiful and multi-faceted country, full of history and complexity, to be sure.

That complexity is one of the standouts for me, but I'll come back to that. I want to start today with a story from my time in seminary, an event that was in my mind as I prepared for this trip and has returned to my thoughts over and over again. One of my favorite professors at Sewanee was a great storyteller and preacher. Many of us took as many of his Greek and Pastoral Care electives as we could, in the hopes that we might absorb just a bit of his wisdom.

Worship

Summer Worship Schedule
The summer worship schedule is now in effect. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica. Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, is celebrated on Sundays at 9:15 am.
Kidurgy
Whether it's raising their voices in song or their prayers to the heavens, the children in Kidurgy are an active part of worship throughout the year at Christ Church, including the summer months. Kidurgy takes place every Sunday during the 9:15 am service and all children ages three and up are welcome. The children gather in the Parish Hall to sing, read scripture and pray from their own bulletins. There is even a short homily. Then they return to their families to receive communion with them. For more information about Kidurgy, please contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected]

Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They will start their next book, Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor on Thursday, June 20. The book is  "...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -  San Diego Tribune

Help for Burroughs Molette
There is an ongoing need to support Burroughs Molette Elementary School (BMES) in Brunswick. Most of the school's students live in poverty, and this carries over to their academic performance. For several years Glynn Episcopal Ministries (GEM) has sponsored mentors and tutors at the school. In the coming school year, they plan to implement a reward program for individual student's successes and gains. If you are interested in helping to create and/or facilitate such an undertaking, please come to a brainstorming session with Fr. Tom in the parish hall at 12:30 pm on Sunday, June 23. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected].

Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies will be packing next on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:00 am. They ' ll be delivering 60 bags to McIntyre Boys and Girls Club each Friday for children who attend St. Simons and Burroughs Molette Elementary and weekend bags to Goodyear Elementary, the host site for a summer school, to children who receive food from the Backpack Buddies program throughout the school year. The Buddies may also serve the summer school program at Altama Elementary. All are welcome to join the line and feed our children in need, in Glynn County. EWC 2019 Tour of Homes Grants Awarded

It is with tremendous excitement that the Christ Church ECW announces a very generous gift of $70,000 to local and regional charities! These gifts come from the combined proceeds of the annual Tour of Homes this past March, as well as the year-long sales of the Christ Church cookbook. Many, many thanks to our Christ Church family and the many dedicated community volunteers who helped us with both projects this year. Lives will be touched thanks to your time and efforts! To see the list of this year's beneficiaries, go to TourofHomes.org
