IN THIS ISSUE
The 2019 Christ Church Tour of Homes went beautifully last Saturday, March 16! Many thanks to all for their hard work! See highlights from the day here.

Rector's Ramblings

The news out of Christchurch New Zealand last week was heartbreaking. Anytime an act of terror like that takes place, it shakes us to our core. It can happen anywhere, after all. When I mentioned the shooting in this weekend's sermon, it was a quick reference, as I made the point that the protection of the "Mother Hen" in Luke's Gospel does not mean we will be free from suffering and loss. Jesus actually warns us of the opposite.

The first time and maybe the second time I preached it, I added a caveat, explaining why I was linking the shooting of Muslims in New Zealand to the protection of Jesus Christ. I did that because I know that there are persons (in and outside of this parish) who think all Muslims are evil; that they are the enemy of the United States and the enemy of Christianity. Such a mindset is not unlike that of the gunman in Christchurch, and it's not helpful. It's also not true.

Worship

Lenten Choral Evensong

On Tuesday, March 19, our young choristers, trebles and cantors led a beautiful, contemplative Evensong through scripture and song. We are grateful for the time and talents they shared in this special Lenten worship service.
Honor Your Loved Ones with Easter Lilies
Orders for Easter lilies are being taken now. Please send the name(s) and a check for $30 for each memorial to Ethel Horton, 402 Palm Court, SSI, 31522. Checks should be made payable to "Christ Church Flower Guild." Please make your order by Monday, April 15. Contact Ethel Horton at [email protected] for more information.

Holy Week and Easter Worship Schedule

Makes plans to join us for worship during Holy Week and Easter this year. A complete list of services may be found here.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
During the season of Lent, the Sunday Morning Adult Class, led by Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown will take a six week break from their current study to participate in a Lenten study based on the book by Max O. Vincent entitled
Because of This I Rejoice:  Reading Philippians during Lent. The study will run on Sundays from March 10 to April 14.  The Adult Class meets in the room next to the choir room in the Parish Hall and everyone is welcome. For more information, please contact Bob at  [email protected]

Wednesday Lenten Study
Fr. Tom is leading a study of Samuel Wells' Hanging by a Thread on Wednesdays during Lent. This series of theological reflections from an internationally known scholar and Anglican cleric focuses on the challenges of our understanding of Christ's crucifixion that arise today. The book study begins at 1:00 pm and there will be lunch at 12:30 pm for those who can attend. All are encouraged to join the Healing Service that precedes the book study, at noon in the historical church. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group has begun reading the book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. In this coming of age memoir, Stevenson recounts his early career and the cases that led him to found the Equal Justice Initiative. The book is available in paperback and as an audiobook, read by the author. For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

Thursday Lenten Spiritual Practices
Want to grow spiritually but don't want another practice or discipline you'll feel guilty about not doing? Join Mother Ashton and Mother Becky to explore spirituality as a way of being engaged in our relationship to God through other people, the world around us and ourselves. We'll look at spirituality as our ongoing, evolving relationship to God and how we can live daily in an awake, holistic, and faithful way. The group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm from March 14 - April 11. The text is  Strength for the Journey: A Guide to Spiritual Practice  by Renee Miller and is available from Amazon in Kindle edition for $14. Hard copies will be available in the church office for $16. Please call the church office to sign-up as the first session will kick-off with a special treat! For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected]

Youth Activities in March

EYC Lenten Study
Our Lenten/Star Wars study is meeting each Sunday, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, in the youth room. We are observing Holy Lent by pairing our Holy Scriptures with scenes from Star Wars and the struggle with the Force and not being tempted by the Dark Side. Join us for popcorn, cookies and refreshments, as we watch a part of a Star Wars movie and have discussion and other activities.  Contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected] for more information.

First Communion
The second class for children who would like to receive their 1st Communion will take place on Sunday, March 31, at 10:20 am, in the church. Please contact her at  [email protected] .

Calling All Cooks!
Christ Church will be supplying Kugel for this year's Community Passover Seder meal on April 11. Fr. Tom is looking for cooks to help make Kugel for the event - 200 servings worth! Rabbi Rachael has supplied a recipe, and it is not a difficult process, but it is a lot of work and a lot of baking, nonetheless. Join Fr. Tom on the afternoon of April 11 to make the Kugels in the Christ Church kitchen. If you'd like to help, please email him at  [email protected] .

Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies will be packing next on Wednesday, March 27, at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall. We cordially invite you to join us on the assembly line! If you'd like more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
Spring Cleaning Christ Church - April 13
Spring is here and now it's time to spruce up Christ Church! Join us on Saturday, April 13, at 9:00 am, and help us paint the exterior of the church and clean the interior. No special skills are required -- though we'd love to have some folks who don't mind climbing, to help paint the upper parts of the church exterior. Just come with a willing spirit, your paintbrushes, tarps, buckets, ladders, rags for cleaning and step-stools! For more information, please contact Alice Barlow at [email protected].

Report from Cuba

We are happy to report that water purification systems provided by Christ Church have been installed in Bartle and Manati, Cuba. Our Christ Church music team made a pilgrimage to Cuba last November, with help from the financial support of donations made by some of our church members. The  Choral Pilgrimage quickly turned into a hybrid musical and relief mission. Read more about the positive outcome of the water purification system installations  here

ECW Tour of Homes 2019TOH_HighlightsPhotos

The 2019 Christ Church Tour of Homes is now in the books and what a great day it was! From one end of St. Simons Island to the other, and across to Sea Island and back, an army of dedicated volunteers, docents, drivers, traffic directors, cooks, servers, hosts and hostesses cheerfully guided approximately 1,000 guests through eleven beautiful homes and historic sites. It took a massive team effort to keep everything flowing smoothly and we are grateful to all who contributed to the success of the day!

Tour Co-Chairman, Charlotte Graham had this to say:

Dear Friends,

Oh, I am so proud of all we accomplished together! The Christ Church Tour of Homes, again, was a huge success this year. From the feedback we've gotten, we know that our Tour Patrons really enjoyed the day! This project has a lot of moving parts. No one area is any more important than the other. The shared effort made, and countless volunteer hours spent, make our Tour of Homes a timeless Christ Church tradition. Thank you all, again, for your friendship, your hard work, and true commitment to making a difference in the lives around us who need a little extra help. Early on in the Tour planning, I ran across this quote from John Wesley on volunteerism. I think he'd be proud of our work with the Tour of Homes!

"Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as you ever can."                                               - John Wesley

I am honored to have had the opportunity to work on the Tour of Homes.  I will cherish the friendships made and the experience forever.

All my best,

Charlotte

Celebrating Our Friends At Christ Church!
Elizabeth Temple and Jimmy McQuade, two of our talented Christ Church trebles, were recently cast in the Frederica Academy Fifth Grade production of Disney's Mulan Jr. Elizabeth tackled the title role as Mulan and Jimmy played Chi Fu, a Chinese Bureaucrat. The Fifth Grade play is an annual tradition at Frederica Academy and a highly anticipated event in the school year. This year's performance took place on March 14. Fifth grade teachers Melanie Howell and Sandra Smith, shared the roles of producer & director. Mrs. Smith made all of the costumes. Phoebe Shelton, the Lower School Music teacher, served as choreographer and music instructor. The students created most of the set design in Mrs. Schuyler's art class.

Christ Church History Books

Memorial Gifts
From time to time we are asked if there are things the Church can use that might be given as a memorial for a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing. Below is a list of opportunities for giving memorials and who you might contact about them. This is a sort of wish list; things that would be nice to have, but aren't in the budget. If you would like to make a memorial gift, please speak with the listed contact so that they know to expect the gift and can instruct you how the gift can be made. Partial gifts towards an item are possible as well.

Current Memorial Opportunities:

Christ Church Outdoor Nativity: GIFTED - THANK YOU! We have obtained a high-quality outdoor creche scene suitable for the front lawn of Christ Church, a post-Christmas opportunity that dramatically reduced the cost for such a set. The intent is to create a simple backdrop for the figures and light them at night. Some figures stand nearly six feet tall. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Timpani Drum Set: $4000 We would like a pair of timpani drums to bolster our music program and be available for regular use in our music program. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Outdoor Stations of the Cross: GIFTED - THANK YOU!
St. Ignatius currently has a partial set of stations in the garden for outdoor use. We would like to replace the weathered stations and expand the arrangement to include all fourteen stations. The cost includes all fourteen stations and lumber to mount the stations not already installed in the garden. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Acolyte Robes: $1750 We are updating our acolyte ministry and their wardrobe. Each robe costs approximately $75 each. We need various sizes/lengths.  Contact: Mtr. Katie at [email protected]

Sanctuary Chairs:  3 CHAIRS GIFTED - THANK YOU! We would like to add additional folding chairs in Christ Church in the choir area to replace the metal chairs.  Chairs are $200 each and are the same style used at the altar, dark wood with red pads. We hope to get 8, total. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Choir Robes: GIFTED - THANK YOU! There is a regular need to replace worn out choir robes for our adult choirs. Robes are $100 each. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]
