Easter is just around the corner! We still need filled plastic eggs for the annual Easter egg hunt, so please drop off your donations at the church office by Thursday, March 29th. ++ Please get your Easter lily orders in to Ethel Horton by 10:00 am, on March 28th, so your memorials can be listed in the Easter bulletin. ++ Make a note to bring your flowers (and cameras) for the Flowering of the Cross on Easter Sunday! |
One downside to a calendar as active as ours is that sometimes things get lost. I don't mean they get lost as in not happening, but lost in the sense that people don't always know all the things going on, because it's a lot to keep straight. That's what I realize may have happened with our Jesus Christ Superstar Mass this Sunday evening. It's Palm Sunday, and it's just before we are off and running with our dozens of Holy Week Liturgies, so it makes sense that some have been expressing surprise when we name it. So if that's you, know that we're offering a Jesus Christ Superstar (JCSS) Mass on Sunday evening in the Parish Hall; 5:30, to be exact.
What is a JCSS Mass, you ask? Well, it's a Eucharist for Palm Sunday that includes music from the rock opera. Most of the music, but not all, comes during the reading of the Passion Narrative, as we go back and forth from narrator to music. The pieces will be sung by soloists in our choir and the congregation. We did a service like this four years ago on Palm Sunday morning, and decided to offer it the evening this time, for those who might like to come from other communities. If it sounds interesting to you, please come, and please invite folks to join you. It will be different and fun, while also being powerful and moving. We have streamlined the service a bit so that it doesn't run too long, so it shouldn't be a two-hour endeavor!

Palm Sunday |
|
On Palm Sunday evening, a traditional Eucharistic service featuring the music from Jesus Christ Superstar will take place at 5:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Please join us for this dramatic musical presentation of the last days of Jesus' life on earth. Michael Hulett will join the X Choir of Christ Church Frederica for this evening's special service.

Holy Week Worship Music |
|
From Kathleen Turner, Organist and Choirmaster
There are some pieces of music that warrant repetition. En Priere, a poem written by Stéphan Bordèse and set to music by French composer Gabrielle Faure, is one of them. The piece is from a collection of 30 Songs for Voice and Piano.
To quote tenor, Matthew Todd, "
Bordese's prayer of the 12-year-old Jesus is one of heartbreaking simplicity and Fauré sets it accordingly with tripleted arpeggios (depicting the Trinity), always ascending in supplication to Heaven. The chanson is not without its passionate moments as the music crescendos and the boy declares:
'auguste Roi des rois, Ô Lumière!' (great King of kings, oh light!)
Religious significance aside, few could fail to be moved when the triplets finally cease and the child's prayer concludes:
'Reveal Yourself to me, Lord, in whom I believe And hope: For you I would suffer and die on the Cross, On Calvary!'"
Throughout Holy Week this piece will be offered as a musical focus on our journey to Calvary. The piece is sung in French. Here is the translation:
If the voice of a child can reach you, O my Father, Listen to the prayer of Jesus on His knees before You. If You have chosen me to teach Your laws On the earth, I will know how to serve You, holy King of Kings, O Light! Place on my lips, O Lord, the salutary truth, So that whoever doubts should serve You with humility! Do not abandon me, give me the necessary gentleness, To alleviate pains, to relieve the suffering, the misery! Reveal Yourself to me, Lord, in Whom I have faith, and I hope, To suffer for You and die on the cross at Calvary!

Youth Choirs Are Flourishing at Christ Church |
By John La Boone
"I will sing of your love and justice; to you, LORD, I will sing praise."
- Psalm 101:1
We are very fortunate at Christ Church to have a thriving music program. The boost our music gives to worship is a treasure, plus the music at funerals, weddings, concerts and fellowship gatherings always comforts, inspires and uplifts us. Our music is one of our greatest assets for evangelism and outreach, too. We have a lot of wonderful music to be thankful for, including the music provided by our youth choirs that Music Director Kathleen Turner has nurtured so carefully over the years.

|
The flowering of the cross has become an Easter Day tradition at Christ Church. (Mr. MacGregor - aka David - will be there to assist, and he might even take a picture of you and your family as you celebrate this joyous day.) Don't forget your flower and your camera on Easter morning!

The 2018 ECW Tour of Homes was a Great Success! A Huge Thank-you to All Involved!
|
Wow! What a fabulous 65th
Annual Tour of Homes it was! Record breaking ticket sales! Gorgeous weather! New buses! Eight breathtaking homes and six thought-provoking historical stops! Seventy-one generous benefactors and 400+ hard-working and happy volunteers! We would like to personally thank each and every person who had anything to do with this Tour. It's inspiring to see all of our church family and friends working together to welcome approximately 1300 guests from all over the country and Canada! The ECW is now busy counting monies and paying bills. Once we get it all settled, we will be extremely proud to announce how much money this Tour, along with ECW sales of cookbooks, etc. will award to primarily local charities, benefitting women and children. We sincerely hope the continued support from all of our church family and friends will bring 65 more years for this time-honored annual event. Organizations may apply for grants on our website: christchurchtourofhomes.org. We will have a wrap-up meeting to discuss all of it soon, once we all recover! Keep an eye open for this upcoming event.
Again, many, many thanks to all!

A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year.

"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.
Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here
and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church! |
|
Christ Church needs docents and greeters! As the team of volunteer docents has diminished over the last few months, due to illness and retirements, so have the number of days we are able to keep the church open to visitors.
Currently, we have a skeleton crew of volunteers to man the church Tuesday through Sunday in the afternoons. After March, we will definitely need some additional folks to help. You can assist by volunteering to docent once a month from 2 to 5 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on this wonderful opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. Contact: Fred Collins at [email protected] to become a docent.

Cross Collection on Display at Epworth |
|
The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth-by-the-Sea Conference and Retreat Center, is happy to announce a special exhibition in the Atrium of the Museum which will be on display from Ash Wednesday
to Easter Sunday
, the whole season of Lent.
The exhibition is the cross collection of one of our own, the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown. The crosses represent a collection gathered over a 40-year ministerial career and come from all over the world. They are made of a huge variety of materials and reflect many different interpretations of one of our most sacred symbols. Though more than 90% of the crosses have been gifts, no cross has ever been repeated and never has the entire collection been on display at one time.
Dr. Brown is particularly pleased to offer this exhibition for the enjoyment of the members of Christ Church, Frederica.
May the cross, as a symbol, remind us of sacrifice and commitment and, especially, of the power of love.
