Rector's Ramblings

We've been raising a butterfly for the last few weeks. Brenda Hartsell shared photos of a monarch from her garden that she took care of and offered us a caterpillar, when she discovered another one (I asked if she might!). It was fun to watch it do its thing. I hadn't watched a butterfly like that since I was in elementary school for a class project. We kept it in butterfly weed, and it never wandered off. It made its chrysalis and went dormant for a while. Fascinatingly, there were spots on the green chrysalis that turned from yellow to shiny gold. Earlier this week, it emerged, transformed into a butterfly.
This reflection isn't going to be the standard reflection on transformations, however. Because the butterfly struggled to hold onto the branches and sticks where it hatched, and while its wings were still wet it fell. Donna eventually saw it, stuck by its wet wings, and helped it grasp a branch and get back up onto vegetation. As it continued to dry out and stretch its wings, it became apparent that its wings were now bent, and they haven't straightened out. It has tried to fly several times, and it always lands on the floor.

Special Music This Sunday

This Sunday, March 31, is often referred to as Mid-Lent.
Libera Me from Gabriel Faure's  Requiem  will be offered as the anthem with Judy Niblock conducting and David Lowe as bass soloist. Linda Minke*, on cello, and Music Director, Kathleen Turner, will accompany.
There will also be two cello and piano offerings, the first,
Ballad in d minor by Edward Solomon, will be the Prelude. Edward was an English composer, as well as a conductor, orchestrator and pianist. He died at age 39, by which time he had written dozens of works produced for the stage, including several for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.
The second selection,  Sicilenne,  by Maria von Paradis, will be played at Communion. Maria (May 15, 1759 - February 1, 1824), was an Austrian musician and composer who lost her sight at an early age, and for whom W. A. Mozart may have written his  Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat major .
* Read more about Linda Minke here.

Our new Christ Church Gift Shop, (inside the Parish House, across from the reception area), is now open on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Come browse the assortment of unique items available, including hand-made prayer beads and our new history book, which is available to parishioners through the month of March, for only $10. We'll also be adding new and seasonal items each week, so come by and check out the inventory. If you would like to make a purchase, cash, checks and credit cards are acceptable.
Our goal is to eventually have the shop open on a regular basis on weekdays, as well as Sundays, so we're looking for volunteers to serve as shopkeepers. Training will be provided. If you're interested in helping with the shop, please contact Ellen Kuehm at 912-996-3392 or at

Memorial Gifts
From time to time we are asked if there are things the Church can use that might be given as a memorial for a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing. Below is a list of opportunities for giving memorials and who you might contact about them. This is a sort of wish list; things that would be nice to have, but aren't in the budget. If you would like to make a memorial gift, please speak with the listed contact so that they know to expect the gift and can instruct you how the gift can be made. Partial gifts towards an item are possible as well.

Current Memorial Opportunities:

Christ Church Outdoor Nativity: GIFTED - THANK YOU! We have obtained a high-quality outdoor creche scene suitable for the front lawn of Christ Church, a post-Christmas opportunity that dramatically reduced the cost for such a set. The intent is to create a simple backdrop for the figures and light them at night. Some figures stand nearly six feet tall. Contact: Fr. Tom at

Timpani Drum Set: $4000 We would like a pair of timpani drums to bolster our music program and be available for regular use in our music program. Contact: Kathleen Turner at

Outdoor Stations of the Cross: GIFTED - THANK YOU!
St. Ignatius currently has a partial set of stations in the garden for outdoor use. We would like to replace the weathered stations and expand the arrangement to include all fourteen stations. The cost includes all fourteen stations and lumber to mount the stations not already installed in the garden. Contact: Fr. Tom at

Acolyte Robes: $1750 We are updating our acolyte ministry and their wardrobe. Each robe costs approximately $75 each. We need various sizes/lengths.  Contact: Mtr. Katie at

Sanctuary Chairs:  3 CHAIRS GIFTED - THANK YOU! We would like to add additional folding chairs in Christ Church in the choir area to replace the metal chairs.  Chairs are $200 each and are the same style used at the altar, dark wood with red pads. We hope to get 8, total. Contact: Kathleen Turner at

Choir Robes: GIFTED - THANK YOU! There is a regular need to replace worn out choir robes for our adult choirs. Robes are $100 each. Contact: Kathleen Turner at
