International Builder Show Re-Cap

Last week, a delegation of SAHBA members participated in the International Builder Show, NAHB Board of Directors, NAHB Leadership Council and various other related NAHB meetings. The Builder Show provides an unrivaled opportunity to view the latest trends, network with industry professionals and explore innovative products and services while the NAHB meetings provide an opportunity to learn about NAHB's advocacy efforts.

Here’s what they said about the experience:

Once again, it’s reassuring to learn how NAHB is on the front lines fighting critical battles for our members at the federal level. Their government affairs, legal action, and regulatory review staff are top-notch. Their efforts are truly making a difference in reducing the burdens placed on land developers and home builders.

- David Godlewski, SAHBA President & CEO

It was inspiring to see and be a part of our Industry banding together from all over the Country in support of one another. The federation’s commitment to Advocacy, Communication, and Education within the Industry was on full display. High-level regulatory topics like potential changes from FEMA and Building Code cycles were introduced, discussed, and strategized on...Marketing, Public and Government Affairs, and Member Services were featured at committee meetings…the full spectrum of topics within our Industry was covered in the Winter Meetings…and then The Builder Show - WOW!

- John Ward, Bowman, Delegate to NAHB Leadership Council

I'm always amazed at the wealth of knowledge that is packed into this show. From the National Association of Home Builders members to the vendors and onsite demonstrations, I always walk away with much more knowledge than I anticipated. I have already recommended products I saw at the show to clients for their home builds!

- Andrew Hayes, Hayes Construction, 2024 Arizona State Rep to NAHB

The overall immersive experience offered by the International Builder Show impresses me every year. Seeing leading-edge design trends and state-of-the-art home products, as well as engaging in the exceptional education and networking opportunities – it doesn’t just give me new ideas but energizes me in growing my business.

- Mike Vasquez, Vaquez Custom Construction

Tiny Home Built at SACCD 2023 Donated to CDO High School

Thank you to those who participated in the 2023 Southern Arizona Construction Career Days tiny home build! The tiny home was designed by Urban Infill Project and built through partnerships with KB Home, AMH Homes, and trade partners En Fuego/Wallcon Framing, Haskins Electric, RiteWay Heating/Cooling and Plumbing, Avanti Windows, Montero Drywall, Gale Insulation, America Roofing who all donated time and material. On February 27, the tiny home group had the privilege of donating the tiny house material to the winner of the drawing, Canyon Del Oro High School. The Construction and Architecture teacher, Joshua Ronstadt, and students from the construction program were there to greet KB Home, Wallcon Framing, Haskins Electric, RiteWay Heating/Cooling and Plumbing, and members of the SACCD board. Mr. Ronstadt and the students were very appreciative of all the donated supplies.

The donation will enable students to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge in construction techniques and materials, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the field. The materials will provide resources for students to participate in various construction projects, competitions, and skill-building activities through Skills USA. Additionally, the donation will demonstrate your commitment to the advancement of construction education and the development of a highly skilled workforce.

The 2024 event will feature another tiny home thanks to the grant submitted by SAHBA and the National Housing Endowment.

Women In Construction Week Mixer Re-Cap

The Women in Construction Week Mixer at Whiskey Roads was a resounding success, with over 100 members from various associations coming together to honor the remarkable women in the construction industry. The event provided a platform for networking, sharing experiences, and celebrating the achievements of women who have made significant contributions to the field. We were ecstatic to be able to participate in this event and look forward to celebrating again next year.

ARC Gets Sneak Preview of Lower Basin State Proposal

On Wednesday, SAHBA’s David Godlewski, joined fellow members of the Arizona Reconsultation Committee to learn about the alternative being proposed by the Lower Basin States (Arizona, Nevada and California) for Colorado River operations after 2026. The proposal is a meaningful shift in philosophy for managing the river. The proposal takes a comprehensive system-wide look at total system contents and not simply elevation levels in Lake Meads and Powell. The proposal also addresses the structural deficit in the Lower Basin, reducing deliveries by 1.5 million acre-feet. The proposal has been submitted to the Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation. The intent is for the proposal to be considered as a formal alternative as part of the NEPA for river management after the 2007 Guidelines expire in 2026. Click here for more information.

SAHBA/PDSD Meetings on Proposed Fee Increases and Other Strategic Priorities

This week, SAHBA members had two opportunities to meet with Kristina Swallow, the Director of Planning & Development Services for the City of Tucson. On March 4, SAHBA organized a meeting with developers, home builders, and Kristina Swallow to address proposed fee increases in the city. This meeting aimed to discuss the potential impacts and concerns regarding these fee hikes. Following up on this discussion, on March 8th, SAHBA, along with TAR, Tucson Metro Chamber, and Arizona's Multihousing Association, hosted a “Coffee with Director Swallow,” which covered a wide range of topics, including fee increases, Plan Tucson, and strategic initiatives such as casita model plans and code amendments to foster development along corridors. SAHBA greatly appreciates Ms. Swallow’s time and willingness to collaborate with our members. Please contact brendan@sahba.org if you have any questions.
