Rector's Ramblings

A few years ago, I rambled about a game I used to play on my cell phone, Clash of Clans. My nephews had gotten me started on it, and I stuck with it; we were in a "family clan," and it was a way to interact with them. Over time, we all basically stopped playing the game. It got old. In some ways, it was a passive game; when you were battling someone, it was your troops going up against their preset defenses. There was no other person actively playing against you, not even a computer. That may be why the company that created the game created a spin-off version, as play of the original, at one time the highest grossing game in the iTunes App Store, began to trail off.

Their successor game, using many of the same ideas and figures, is Clash Royale. Unlike its older brother, CR is a live action game. Each player builds a battle deck of eight cards. You might choose to have wizards, giants, goblins, barbarians, Valkyries, dragons, and a host of other options; there are more than ninety cards available. Each card costs a certain amount to play, they have unique ranges on the board and have varying degrees of speed, strength, and durability. The object is to destroy more of your opponent's castles than they destroy of yours.  You start with three, and if someone gets all three, they win. Oh, and you only have three minutes per game to win.

Worship

Bluegrass Eucharist and Church Picnic
Join us this Sunday, May 19, at 11:30 am, for the annual Christ Church picnic at Honey Creek! We'll have a traditional Bluegrass Eucharist featuring Marshgrass, and the Baptism of Louise and Bill Bartlett's granddaughter, too!

After worship, it'll be time for lunch, games and other activities on the grounds. Bring your softball gear and we'll see if we can organize a game. And don't forget to pack the sunscreen and bug spray!  This is a wonderful day of revival and renewal and all are encouraged to come! For more information, please contact  Glenn Queener at  [email protected]

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday Morning Class has  resumed its study of James Moore's book, God Was Here, and I Was Out to Lunch, which explores how it is possible to miss God's opportunities of grace because we are sometimes too caught up with the "business" of our lives.   For more information, please contact Bob at  [email protected]

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am  in the youth room of the Parish Hall. They have just begun discussing Eric Hoffer's The True Believer: Thoughts of the Nature of Mass Movements. The group meets during the summer and newcomers are always welcome.  For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

Katie at [email protected].

If you can help in any way, please contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected] and she'll find the perfect place for you!

Outreach

Recognizing Street Beat GraduatesStreetBeatGraduates
Street Beat  is a Safe Harbor program that supports homeless teens in Glynn County. Christ Church ministers to these youth through our hunger outreach program.  We are now collecting cards and donations for gift cards for three Street Beat graduates, Jaylen Singleton, Jodarius Demery and Azavian Evans, who will soon graduate from high school. You may congratulate these young men by bringing signed graduation cards and contributions towards gift cards to the church office before May 20, for their graduation party on May 21.  Contact: Tony Kreimborg at  [email protected]

Snowbirds Flying ... Buses Arriving
With the arrival of Spring, our Afternoon Docent Team ranks are beginning to thin as some of our members fly north for the summer and others enjoy travel plans. At the same time, busloads of visitors are arriving in the afternoons, eager to learn about our historic church. We could use some help!

On Friday, May 24, a docent orientation session led by Susan Garrett and Glenn Queener will be held at the church from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. You will meet some of our current docent team and learn how we enjoy sharing the Christ Church story with visitors from around the world. Attendees will receive a packet of information on the church building, history and docent duties to review, and be assigned someone to "shadow" during one or more shifts before flying solo.

We are also looking for "greeters" to provide a second pair of hands on busy afternoons - typically mid-week. The docent on hand would provide the history and answer questions; your job would be to direct traffic and help with cookbook and history pamphlet sales. If this job is of interest to you, we can put you to work immediately. Please contact Susan Garrett, but also plan to attend the orientation session.

Please contact Susan Garrett by email: [email protected] or phone: (912) 434-9351 with any questions and to RSVP for the lunch on the 24. We hope you will join us to find out more about this rewarding ministry where we often receive more than we give!

ECW

Celebrating Our 90+ Ladies of the Church
We are blessed at Christ Church to have over twenty ladies who have reached their 90s or who will be celebrating their 90th birthdays this year. We were delighted to recognize them on Mother's Day with a reception hosted by the ECW during coffee hour. We cannot express enough how much these ladies' years of service and devotion have meant to all of  us at Christ Church! See photos of the celebration here.
Tour of Homes - Time to UnWINE from 2019 and Plan for 2020!
Tour of Homes Volunteers, it's time to UnWine from 2019 and plan for 2020! Please join us on Tuesday, June 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Christ Church Parish Hall, for a glass of wine or iced tea and light appetizers. We will be sharing thoughts on the Tour of Homes past and looking for ideas for the next decade. Nursery will be available. Please RSVP to Susie Hodges at [email protected] or 912-571-1674.

Frederick Cousins Guild
The Frederick Cousins Guild will have their End-of-the-Year Celebration on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 6:00 pm. This year, we will gather at Phil and Linda Allen's beautiful home on Stevens Road. We'll be celebrating all who helped, in any way, to make the 2019 Oyster Roast such a successful fundraiser. We will be making donations to The Compass Rose Society, Grace House of Brunswick, The Farm at Oatlands North and to Very Special Arts of Glynn County. Please RSVP to Louise Bartlett at [email protected] or 912-638-3303.

Mom's Night Out
This is the last Mom's Night Out before summer vacation!

The menu is written daily and is inspired by the flavors and traditions of Southeastern United States cuisine. Ingredients are sourced from local farmers and fishermen and are inspired by wood-fired cooking. Our craft beverage program focuses on the use of fresh ingredients and includes a variety of unique wines All of this is served in a fun and contemporary atmosphere at achievable prices. Dress is smart casual. Please mark your calendar and reserve your spot with Ashton at [email protected] by Wednesday, May 15. We look forward to seeing you!
Susanna Wesley Guild
The Susanna Wesley Guild has switched into summer lunch mode and will be meeting next for lunch on Tuesday, May 21, at Tramici, at 11:30 am. (Please note that this is earlier than we've met in the past, as we're hoping to beat the lunch crowd.) We'll meet every month, on the third Tuesday at 11:30 am, at a different restaurant, just to keep things interesting. All ladies are welcome to join us! For more information, please contact Ethel Horton at [email protected]

Stay Informed

Christ Church and Realm
We're happy to announce that the church has recently completed the transition to a new database, called Realm. Realm is more than a database. It's a comprehensive online ministry tool designed for real time connection. It helps Christ Church connect with you and you connect with us. It also allows you to manage your personal information, (and who is allowed to see it), control your giving,  and keep in touch with the groups that matter to you. On Monday, April 29, we will send out an invitation to connect with Realm. For more information, please contact Glenn Queener at [email protected].

Christ Church Gift Shop - Now Open!

Our new Christ Church Gift Shop, (inside the Parish House, across from the reception area), is now open on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Come browse the assortment of unique items available, including hand-made prayer beads and our new history book. We'll also be adding new and seasonal items each week, so come by and check out the inventory. If you would like to make a purchase, cash, checks and credit cards are acceptable.

Our goal is to eventually have the shop open on a regular basis on weekdays, as well as Sundays, so we're looking for volunteers to serve as shopkeepers. Training will be provided. If you're interested in helping with the shop, please contact Ellen Kuehm at 912-996-3392 or at  [email protected]

Memorial Gifts
From time to time we are asked if there are things the Church can use that might be given as a memorial for a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing. Below is a list of opportunities for giving memorials and who you might contact about them. This is a sort of wish list; things that would be nice to have, but aren't in the budget. If you would like to make a memorial gift, please speak with the listed contact so that they know to expect the gift and can instruct you how the gift can be made. Partial gifts towards an item are possible as well.

Current Memorial Opportunities:

Timpani Drum Set:  $4000 We would like a pair of timpani drums to bolster our music program and be available for regular use in our music program. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Acolyte Robes: $1750 We are updating our acolyte ministry and their wardrobe. Each robe costs approximately $75 each. We need various sizes/lengths.  Contact: Mtr. Katie at [email protected]

Sanctuary Chairs:  3 CHAIRS GIFTED - THANK YOU! We would like to add additional folding chairs in Christ Church in the choir area to replace the metal chairs.  Chairs are $200 each and are the same style used at the altar, dark wood with red pads. We hope to get 8, total. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Giving Made Easy

You may use the CCF website to make pledges, donations and payments for some activities. Just select "Giving" at the top of the CCF homepage. This brings you to the pay portal. Contact: Stan Kyker, CCF financial administrator at 912-638-8683.
