If you're not able to come, regular Eucharist services will be held on Saturday at St. Ignatius, at 5:30 pm; on Sunday at Christ Church at 8:00 and 9:15 am; and Morning Prayer will be offered at 11:15 am.

Rector's Ramblings

Many of you will remember a couple of years ago when I helped organize a celebration for Ernie Andrus, the nonagenarian who completed his cross-country run on St. Simons. As he ran the final miles, he was surrounded by a cheering crowd, and the jubilation on the beach was an amazing spectacle. Ernie represented something that most of us would call heroic, from his service in WWII to his perseverance along his journey. It is an event I will always remember, I'm quite sure.

This weekend our beach saw different kind of heroes; heroes who ended a journey, but not with fanfare and celebration. Instead it is a story of heroic tragedy. On Mother's Day, many of us learned, within hours, that a woman had drowned off Massengale Beach and that a man was missing after trying to help rescue stranded swimmers. In the days since, as the story has unfolded, we now know that both Gregory Grant and Aleisha Rankin died while successfully helping children, a toddler, in particular, make it safely to shore after getting caught in a strong tide. Rankin died at the hospital, despite the valiant efforts of a pair of nurses who happened to be on the beach.  Grant's body remained in the water overnight until it was finally discovered on Monday morning after the search resumed.

Summer is rapidly approaching and with it comes the summer worship schedule. Regular weekend worship services will take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm, at St. Ignatius and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am, at Christ Church. The 9:15 am Parish Hall service has concluded for the season. Kidurgy will continue to take place on Sundays, at 9:15 am, throughout the summer.

May Birthdays in Church

Many May birthdays were celebrated this past Sunday, May 13th, at Christ Church, including the birthday of our own Father Tom, who turned 40 on that very day. He endured some good-natured ribbing and a special birthday song penned by Te Turner. Happy Birthday Fr. Tom!

It's Tom's Birthday
(Sung to Alleluia, sing to Jesus)

Alleluia, sing to Thomas,
Thirty-something never more.

Alleluia, it's his birthday,
Travelled 'round the sun once more.

Let's not praise him, let's just tease him-
Lest he get a swollen head.

We'll just offer this song while singing
Happy Birthday to him instead...

Classes are in the parish house from 10:30 until 11:15 am and will continue to meet over the summer.  For more information, contact Bob at [email protected] .

Men's Study Group
The Wednesday morning Men's Study Group has started a new book this month, A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, by Tom Gjelten. A Nation of Nations is  "an incisive look at immigration, assimilation, and national identity" ( Kirkus Reviews ) and the landmark immigration law that transformed the face of the nation more than fifty years ago, as told through the stories of immigrant families in one suburban county in Virginia. Books are available in the church office for $13. For  more information, please contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] .

Sunday School Sundae Party

Sunday school classes for our children and youth have concluded for the season, but not before a sweet ice cream send-off last Sunday morning. Cheers to our students, teachers and parents for another great Sunday school year! We look forward to seeing you at Kidurgy and VBS this summer.

Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic

The Diocese of Georgia will sponsor a trip for youth to Iglesia Episcopal San José in Boca Chica from June 23-30, 2018. The missioners on this team will conduct Vacation Bible School classes at two nearby Episcopal churches, Santo Tomás in Gautier and Monte de Sión in the Altagracia barrio of Boca Chica. Christ Church EYC members Kat Chitty and Waverly Brown will be part of the mission team. If you would like to help sponsor this trip, please send checks to the Diocesan Office (18 E. 34th Street, Savannah GA 31401) marked Attn: Joshua Varner and noted with "Youth Mission Trip Supplies". If you prefer to donate physical items, here are some suggestions: Markers (Crayons are heavier and therefore not preferred), Popsicle Sticks (wide are better than narrow), Pipe Cleaners (also called chenille sticks in this day and age), Deflated Kickballs with a hand air pump and needles to use once we arrive, Frisbees, Tissue Paper (can be used to make paper flowers), Construction Paper (not lots of this, because it is also heavy), Craft Scissors, Stickers, Slap Bracelets (make sure there are enough for several hundred kids), Bubbles, Scratch Art Paper (black, when you scratch it color is revealed), Elmer's Glue (or equivalent), Glue sticks.  Contact: Josh Varner at [email protected]

ECW Announces Grants for 2018BigCheck

It is with tremendous excitement that the Christ Church ECW announces a very generous gift of $85,000 to nearly 40 local and regional charities! All who applied for grants were accepted! These gifts come from the combined proceeds of the 65th annual Tour of Homes this past March, as well as the year-long sales of the Christ Church cookbook. Many, many thanks to our Christ Church family and the many dedicated community volunteers who helped us with both projects this year. Lives will be touched thanks to your time and efforts!

A Day at the Beach with GEM

The Burroughs Mollette Kindergarten class enjoyed a beach outing this past week, chaperoned by friends from Glynn Episcopal Ministries.  The children tasted pickle weed, caught blue crabs in lift nets, learned about bees and saw them building comb in an observation hive.  They tasted different kinds of honey, went to beach and learned how sand dunes were formed.  Lastly, they had a pizza picnic at East Beach. If you'd like to get involved with Glynn  Episcopal  Ministries, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Tom and our brothers and sisters at Temple Beth Tefilloh on Saturday, May 19 for a Shavuot celebration.  Beginning at 7:30 pm , there will be Shabbot (Sabbath) prayers, with reflections on the giving of the law from Rabbi Rachael Bregman, Fr. Picnic at Honey Creek - May 20th

The annual  Christ Church picnic  at Honey Creek camp and conference center will take place on Sunday, May 20th. All in the Christ Church family are encouraged to join in this time of reflection, reconnection and recreation. At 11:30 am we will have our Bluegrass Eucharist in the chapel, featuring  Marshgrass , followed by lunch. A generous benefactor has made a donation that will pay for lunch for all, so there will be no cost to attend the picnic. However, you must still register to come, so that we can have an accurate head count for meal preparation. (Donations are welcome, too.) After lunch, we hope to offer some fun and games, including softball, egg roulette, a peanut scramble, and more. If you would be willing to put together an activity or game, please let Fr. Tom know! This will be a wonderful opportunity for fun as a parish family!

(For those unable to attend the picnic, Holy Eucharist will be offered at Christ Church at 8:00 and 9:15 am, and Morning Prayer will be said at 11:15 am.)

To register to come to the church picnic, click here or call the office at 912-638-8683 to be added to the list.

Fundraiser for X Choir

You are invited to a party at the TreeBar at Bennie's Red Barn from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, June 15. We're celebrating because our own X Choir has been asked to sing at worship services and events at 2018 the General Convention of the Episcopal Church which takes place in Austin, TX July 5-13. In addition, CCF organist and choirmaster Kathleen Turner is serving on the music committee for this important conclave. While this a great honor for our church and for the X Choir, the group could use some assistance with travel and lodging expenses. The party will give you a chance to enjoy a BBQ buffet, a cash bar and to hear Michael Hulett, Trina Meade and the X Choir. There will also be a silent auction. If you have something to donate, contact George Ingram at [email protected]. Tickets for the party go on sale after each service this week. The cost is $25. Don't miss this!

Beach Time!

Christ Church is heading to the beach this summer.  Join us at the Coast Guard Station beach access each Sunday in June after 12:30 pm. We'll hang out and enjoy the beauty of our island home together.

Icon Writing Workshop
The icon writing workshop led by Fr. Dave Holland returns to Christ Church  August 26-31 . When the CCF icon writers shared some of their work with the congregation during Lent, everyone was impressed with the serenity and beauty of each piece. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing. Contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected].

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
