Rector's Ramblings

This past Sunday I preached about the ongoing need to support Burroughs-Mollette Elementary  School (BMES) in Brunswick. BMES is still the poorest school in Glynn County, and actually for several counties around (based on the percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunches). When compared with all the elementary schools in Glynn, Brantley, McIntosh, and Camden Counties, Burroughs Mollette is the poorest by this measure. And, as research has shown over and over again, poor schools, where the majority of students are poor, have worse outcomes academically. It's not so much that children in poverty can't learn and can't excel, but rather that when a school is predominantly poor, there is a strong negative correlation between that widespread poverty and performance on standardized measures.

Worship

Bluegrass Eucharist and Church Picnic

As the old folk song says, we "went down to the river to pray..." this past Sunday, in the chapel at Honey Creek, at the Georgia Episcopal Retreat Center, on the shores of the Satilla River. A gentle breeze kept the deer flies at bay (for the most part), while Bluegrass music, provided by local favorite band, Marshgrass, kept toes tapping and voices raised in song. The baptism of little Gaellyn O'Neil Bartlett, and the renewal of Baptismal Vows completed this invigorating waterside worship service. Afterwards, all gathered for a delicious meal in the dining hall. To see more photos from this day of retreat and renewal, click here.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday Morning Class has  resumed its study of James Moore's book, God Was Here, and I Was Out to Lunch, which explores how it is possible to miss God's opportunities of grace because we are sometimes too caught up with the "business" of our lives.   For more information, please contact Bob at  rwb385@gmail.com

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am  in the youth room of the Parish Hall. They have just begun discussing Eric Hoffer's The True Believer: Thoughts of the Nature of Mass Movements. The group meets during the summer and newcomers are always welcome.  For more information, please contact Te Turner at royteturner@gmail.com .

Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They will start their next book, Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor on Thursday, June 20. The book is  "...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -  San Diego Tribune

Snowbirds Flying ... Buses Arriving
With the arrival of Spring, our Afternoon Docent Team ranks are beginning to thin as some of our members fly north for the summer and others enjoy travel plans. At the same time, busloads of visitors are arriving in the afternoons, eager to learn about our historic church. We could use some help!

On Friday, May 24,  a docent orientation session, led by Susan Garrett and Glenn Queener, will be held at the church from 11 am-1 pm. Lunch will be provided. You will meet some of our current docent team and learn how we enjoy sharing the Christ Church story with visitors from around the world. Attendees will receive a packet of information on the church building, history and docent duties to review, and be assigned someone to "shadow" during one or more shifts before flying solo. While some of our team enjoy working several days a month,  one day of docent duty a month is all that is asked of our docents.
We are also looking for "greeters" to provide a second pair of hands on busy afternoons - typically mid-week. The docent on hand would provide the history and answer questions; your job would be to direct traffic and help with cookbook and history pamphlet sales. If this job is of interest to you, we can put you to work immediately.
Please contact Susan Garrett by email: alnsusan@comcast.net or phone: (912) 434-9351 with any questions and to RSVP for the lunch on May 24. We hope you will join us to find out more about this rewarding ministry where we often receive more than we give!
Fr. Tom Visits Burroughs Molette Elementary
On Tuesday, May 21, Fr. Tom spoke to the students at Burroughs Molette Elementary School as a part of a year-end assembly to recognize behavior and academic achievement. He shared a story about his own childhood and also shared the daily practice of sending his girls into school with the reminder: "Be strong, be kind, help where you can, and have fun!" Learn more about Burroughs Molette and how Christ Church is involved with the school in a Rambling by Fr. Tom here.

Chi Rho A Capella Performance

Last Wednesday the Parish Hall was filled with beautiful hymns and spirituals exquisitely performed by Chi Rho, an award winning a capella men's ensemble from Wake Forest University. This performance was their last for the academic year, which meant it was also the last for several graduating Seniors.

Their selections highlighted solo voices and intricate harmonies. If you weren't looking, you'd think there was a percussionist in the ensemble, when indeed all the sounds listeners heard were made solely from the young men and their voices.

Many thanks to George Ingram, Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, for extending a warm welcome to these young men at Saturday's Liturgy at St. Ignatius and to both George and Glenn Queener for organizing a delicious lunch for our large audience on Wednesday.

Frederick Cousins Guild Party

The Frederick Cousins Guild enjoyed a delightful evening at the home and new barn of Phil and Linda Allen on Thursday, May 16. The weather was perfect, there was a great turn-out, and the barbecue dinner supplied by Tony & Sara Kreimborg was beyond delicious. The highlight of the evening was the blessing of the Allen's new barn, by Mother Ashton and Mother Katie. After that, Fr. Tom was talked into climbing up into the saddle by telling him he was probably the only one even capable of doing so!

Afterwards, all went back to Phil and Linda's house and celebrated another successful year. From the funds raised from the oyster roast, the guild was able to make donations to the Compass Rose Society, Grace House of Brunswick, Very Special Arts Glynn County, and the Farm at Oatlands!
OMG Meeting on Friday, June 7
Our O(utrageously) M(ature) G(roup) will be meeting next on Friday, June 7, at 11:30 am in the Parish Hall for food, fellowship and games. Hosting this month's meeting will be sweet sisters, Isabella and Abigail Williston, while their mom, Mother Ashton is away in the Holy Lands. You don't want to miss this Friday of fun! If you'd like to buy lunch from HoneyBaked Hams for $10, please call the church office at 912-638-8683, by Thursday, June 5 and let us know.

Celebrating Our Friends at Christ Church

Sunday's Bluegrass Eucharist at Honey Creek was made even more joyful, when the granddaughter of Bill and Louise Bartlett, Gaellyn O'Neil Bartlett, was baptized during the worship service. Gaellyn and her extended family were all on hand for this very special sacrament!

Christ Church Gift Shop - Now Open!

Our new Christ Church Gift Shop, (inside the Parish House, across from the reception area), is now open on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Come browse the assortment of unique items available, including hand-made prayer beads and our new history book. We'll also be adding new and seasonal items each week, so come by and check out the inventory. If you would like to make a purchase, cash, checks and credit cards are acceptable.

Our goal is to eventually have the shop open on a regular basis on weekdays, as well as Sundays, so we're looking for volunteers to serve as shopkeepers. Training will be provided. If you're interested in helping with the shop, please contact Ellen Kuehm at 912-996-3392 or at  ekuehm@gmail.com
