Rector's Ramblings

Some folks will complain about anything and everything. I am all for critical thinking. I think we need to learn to view ourselves, our institutions, our culture, our country, and our world with a critical eye, but not in the sense of offering criticism for criticism's sake. I get tired of people offering an opinion, but couching it as some kind of objective critique. And no, before you ask, this isn't a new insight for me. It's a recurring theme, just not one I've rambled about before.

This time around, however, I am at a loss to understand it. What I'm reacting to is the complaining and criticism of the Royal Wedding sermon. I said on Sunday that our Presiding Bishop preached a sermon that no one could take offense to, because he captured an essential quality of Christian teaching that is timeless and challenging. The foundational importance of God-given and God-demonstrated love should be unassailable. I was wrong. Yes, people are entitled to their opinions, however, some opinions are more credible and viable than others.

Worship

Worship Schedule for the Summer

Christ Church is officially on the summer schedule now. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm, at St. Ignatius and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am, at Christ Church. The 9:15 am Parish Hall service has concluded until the fall. Kidurgy will continue to take place on Sundays, at 9:15 am, throughout the summer.

Bluegrass Eucharist at Honey Creek

A heart-warming Pentecost Sunday was celebrated with a lively Bluegrass Eucharist this past week at Honey Creek. The lively, toe-tapping music by guest band Marshgrass went a long way to banishing the gray gloom of the rainy day. After the worship service, all adjourned to the camp dining hall for fellowship and a great meal. The day wrapped up with games and other activities. To see more photos, click here.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class is studying Adam Hamilton's new book Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Troubled Times.  Everyone is welcome. Classes are in the parish house from 10:30 until 11:15 am and will continue to meet over the summer.  For more information, contact Bob at rwb385@gmail.com .

Men's Study Group
The Wednesday morning Men's Study Group has started a new book this month, A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, by Tom Gjelten. A Nation of Nations is  "an incisive look at immigration, assimilation, and national identity" ( Kirkus Reviews ) and the landmark immigration law that transformed the face of the nation more than fifty years ago, as told through the stories of immigrant families in one suburban county in Virginia. Books are available in the church office for $13. For  more information, please contact Fr. Tom at tom@ccfssi.org .

Youth

The Christ Church EYC bid a very fond farewell to Youth Missioner Brad Hamil this past Sunday at their final meeting of the season. Brad was presented with a beautifully framed rendering of the Rooted and Relevant tree with the scriptural verse Colossians 2:7.

Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic

The Diocese of Georgia will sponsor a trip for youth to Iglesia Episcopal San José in Boca Chica from June 23-30, 2018. The missioners on this team will conduct Vacation Bible School classes at two nearby Episcopal churches, Santo Tomás in Gautier and Monte de Sión in the Altagracia barrio of Boca Chica. Christ Church EYC members Kat Chitty and Waverly Brown will be part of the mission team. If you would like to help sponsor this trip, please send checks to the Diocesan Office (18 E. 34th Street, Savannah GA 31401) marked Attn: Joshua Varner and noted with "Youth Mission Trip Supplies". If you prefer to donate physical items, here are some suggestions: Markers (Crayons are heavier and therefore not preferred), Popsicle Sticks (wide are better than narrow), Pipe Cleaners (also called chenille sticks in this day and age), Deflated Kickballs with a hand air pump and needles to use once we arrive, Frisbees, Tissue Paper (can be used to make paper flowers), Construction Paper (not lots of this, because it is also heavy), Craft Scissors, Stickers, Slap Bracelets (make sure there are enough for several hundred kids), Bubbles, Scratch Art Paper (black, when you scratch it color is revealed), Elmer's Glue (or equivalent), Glue sticks.  Contact: Josh Varner at jvarner@gaepiscopal.org

ECW

ECW Announces Grants for 2018BigCheck

Our parish may be small, but we are mighty!  Proceeds from the ECW's 2018 Tour of Homes and sales of the Christ Church cookbook have been tallied and the total is an astounding $85,000. This money was recently distributed to a record number of local and regional charities. In fact, all who applied for grants were accepted. The ECW extends its thanks to the extraordinary Christ Church family and to the many dedicated community volunteers who helped with both fundraising projects.

Outreach

Help Needed for CCF Clean-Up Day
Don't leave Junior Warden Beryl Blatchford on her own! Sign up today to help!!
Saturday, June 16 is Clean-Up Day at Christ Church!
Please join us from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on the parish grounds to help spruce up our campus. Clean-up day items include: painting the church exterior, cleaning the church interior, painting the Winn Building interior, weeding the church exterior, and weeding the Parish House exterior. There's a job for everyone! A lunch of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers will be served to all the hard workers, courtesy of Tony Kreimborg. So mark your calendars for clean-up day and let us know you're coming, by calling the church office at 912-638-8683. If you've got your own supplies to use and share, please let us know what you'll be bringing. We need: paint brushes, paint buckets, ladders, scrapers, sand paper, rags, drop cloths and rubber gloves. See you on June 16!

Fellowship

Breathe!
Christ Church has formed a group for mothers of young children through school-aged children (school age being Pre-K through Grade 12). The group is called BREATHE and meets monthly for coffee, fellowship, support and a short devotional. The time we spend together will be a time to care for one another and take some time out of our schedules to stop and "breathe". This is a completely laid-back group, so younger children are welcome. The group will be meeting next on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 9:00 am, at Palm Coast Cafe in the St. Simons Village. Please join us! For more information, contact Mtr. Ashton Williston at ashton@ccfssi.org.

Fundraiser for X Choir

You are invited to a party at the TreeBar at Bennie's Red Barn from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, June 15. We're celebrating because our own X Choir has been asked to sing at worship services and events at 2018 the General Convention of the Episcopal Church which takes place in Austin, TX July 5-13. In addition, CCF organist and choirmaster Kathleen Turner is serving on the music committee for this important conclave. While this a great honor for our church and for the X Choir, the group could use some assistance with travel and lodging expenses. The party will give you a chance to enjoy a BBQ buffet, a cash bar and to hear Michael Hulett, Trina Meade Misty Renard-Lascowski and the X Choir. There will also be a silent auction. If you have something to donate, please contact George Ingram at george@ccfssi.org. Tickets for the party will be on sale after each service this week. The cost is $25. Don't miss this!

Beach Time!

Christ Church is heading to the beach this summer.  Join us at the Coast Guard Station beach access each Sunday in June after 12:30 pm. We'll hang out and enjoy the beauty of our island home together.

Icon Writing Workshop
The icon writing workshop led by Fr. Dave Holland returns to Christ Church  August 26-31 . When the CCF icon writers shared some of their work with the congregation during Lent, everyone was impressed with the serenity and beauty of each piece. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing. Contact Mtr. Becky at Becky@ccfssi.org.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
